Sources: NBA finalizes $76B in media rights deals – Sports Business Journal

The NBA has locked in its arduous media rights deal with ESPN, NBCUniversal and Amazon totaling $76B over 11 years, three sources confirmed with SBJ, a tedious, six-month negotiation that will likely be ratified by the league’s Board of Governors next Tuesday, July 16, in Las Vegas and then potentially head back into limbo.

Sources said the deals with the three companies had been formalized for over a month. But because incumbent partner Warner Bros. Discovery has an ambiguous matching rights clause in its current agreement — dating back to 2002 — league lawyers have needed the extra weeks to review and adjust the contractual language. But, as of today, sources said the league was “pencils down,’’ with no more changes left to be made, meaning ESPN, NBCUniversal and Amazon either already have or will get official approval from their respective executive boards by Monday.

The BOG will then likely ratify the overall deal on Tuesday in Las Vegas, leading to a sequence of events that could either delay or alter the deal. Sources said that on Wednesday, July 17, the league will submit the approved deal to WBD, which will then have five days to match, something Commissioner Adam Silver has called a “complex legal issue.”
