College basketball transfer portal team rankings: Arkansas, Kentucky rise in updated top 20 as window closes – 247Sports
The college basketball transfer portal window is closed, which means no more players can enter — unless paperwork was submitted before the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline Wednesday. More than 1,900 players entered the transfer portal during the 2024 cycle, which is a record that may never be surpassed with the final round of super seniors factoring into the equation. With the window closing, 247Sports released its final transfer portal player rankings featuring a new No. 1 at the top. Most of these impact transfers are already committed elsewhere resulting in a fresh look at the latest college basketball transfer portal team rankings.
While most of the teams inside the top 20 are undergoing a rebuild, some are strengthening the roster for a run at a national championship in 2025.
More than a quarter of the updated top-100 transfer portal players from this 2024 cycle remain uncommitted, which means there could still be plenty of movement in the team rankings before the dust completely settles on the college basketball transfer cycle.

New Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey went straight to work constructing a roster for next season and now has eight incoming transfers locked in since late March. A pair of former Charleston standouts followed him to the Cardinals, including top scorer Reyne Smith and center James Scott. However, the big addition so far for Louisville is former James Madison combo guard Terrence Edwards Jr., who ranks among the top 80 transfer prospects in the class after leading the Dukes in scoring this past season.

Can NC State reload and make another deep NCAA Tournament run in 2025? The Wolfpack certainly got the attention of several top transfers this spring including a former Louisville duo of Mike James and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, who will remain in the ACC next season. The pair combined to score 25.5 points with 13.4 rebounds per game during the 2023-24 campaign. All four of the incoming transfers for NC State and head coach Kevin Keatts rate as four-star prospects.

Alabama hit big in the transfer portal to help its efforts in reaching the Final Four for the first time in program history this past season. The Crimson Tide look to repeat that formula of success heading into the 2024-25 campaign with three incoming transfers up to this point. Rival lines are no match for the transfer portal era with former Auburn point guard Aden Holloway making a move to Alabama after just one season with the Tigers. Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats has a solid trio of transfers this spring.

Texas lost four scholarship players to the transfer portal during the spring window, but made up for it with five newcomers to help limit the damage. The Longhorns grabbed former Arkansas shooting guard Tramon Mark as one of the best available scoring threats in the portal and the headliner of the haul up to this point. Former Oregon State point guard Jordan Pope provides another talented scoring option as well for Texas after averaging a team-high 17.6 points and 3.4 assists this past season. Head coach Rodney Terry has pieces to surround incoming five-star freshman Tre Johnson for the 2024-25 season.

Illinois lost seven of its top nine scorers from a squad that advanced all the way to the Elite Eight this past season. So, replenishing the roster with transfers is a must for head coach Brad Underwood. The process seems to be a success up to this point with the spring window now closed and the Fighting Illini securing five newcomers. Former Arizona point guard and top-40 overall transfer Kylan Boswell headlines the group that also includes former Notre Dame power forward Carey Booth as another top-100 transfer player in this cycle.

Ole Miss got on a hot streak early in the transfer portal window with a handful of commitments before landing the headliner of its haul last week. Former Virginia Tech point guard Sean Pedulla will spend his final year of eligibility in Oxford coming off a career-best season in which he averaged 16.4 points per game. Four of the five incoming transfers for head coach Chris Beard and the Rebels rank among the top-150 in the latest update. Former Seton Hall small forward Dre Davis provides another veteran presence for Ole Miss with more than 1,100 career points while shooting 47% from the field.

After matching its lowest single-season win total (8) in almost 60 years and going winless against SEC opponents, Missouri is in desperate need of upgrades to its roster ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The Tigers already have a quartet of four-star transfers committed, including former Duke power forward Mark Mitchell and Iowa veteran point guard Tony Perkins. Third-year head coach Dennis Gates also secured a top-15 high school recruiting class that could help Missouri get things turned around after a dismal season.

Penny Hardaway faces added pressure to take the next step at Memphis in 2024-25. The Tigers reached at least 20 wins in each of his six seasons as head coach at his alma mater, but have yet to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. An influx of talent from the transfer portal could help Memphis hit another gear with former Texas point guard Tyrese Hunter and former Tulsa shooting guard PJ Haggerty molding a strong pairing in the backcourt. Haggerty finished as the second-leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference this past season with 21.2 points per game.

After finishing the season with a losing record for the first time in eight years, head coach Mick Cronin and UCLA went to work early in the transfer portal to secure several prized commitments. The most notable newcomer is former USC small forward Kobe Johnson, who opted to make the crosstown move to the rival Bruins. A new point guard is also en route to UCLA with former Louisville standout Skyy Clark being the first of six transfer additions since the start of the cycle. The Bruins also landed a trio of power forwards for size — Tyler Bilodeau (Oregon State), Eric Dailey (Oklahoma State) and William Kyle (South Dakota State).

Michigan made a major push in the past two weeks with a wave of incoming transfers headlined by two of the best big men in the portal this cycle. Former Yale standout Danny Wolf was the first to join the haul before former Florida Atlantic 7-foot-1 center Vladislav Goldin decided to follow new Wolverines head coach Dusty May to Ann Arbor. Michigan also landed a trio of transfers with high-major experience including former Ohio State shooting guard Roddy Gayle Jr. and Auburn point guard Tre Donaldson. There is once again a buzz in Ann Arbor as a new era of Michigan basketball begins.

Kentucky is red-hot in the transfer portal as the spring window closes. New head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats are already up to seven incoming transfers as they piece together a roster. Former McDonald’s All-American Brandon Garrison headlines the haul for Kentucky. The 6-foot-11, 245-pound big man flashed as a true freshman at Oklahoma State last season. Former San Diego State point guard Lamont Butler Jr. and former Oklahoma wing Otega Oweh also rank as top-50 transfer additions for Kentucky following the recent update. The start of the new era in Lexington is promising and there could be another piece on the way still.

New head coach Darian DeVries quietly has West Virginia in the top five of the transfer portal team rankings after securing the best point guard in the cycle. Former Oklahoma State and East Carolina standout Javon Small will remain in the Big 12 for the 2024-25 season. The Mountaineers immediately landed one of the top early transfers in Tucker DeVries, the son of the new head man in Morgantown and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. West Virginia could be setting itself up to see immediate success in a new era with a strong incoming transfer class.

John Calipari knew the top priority upon his arrival at Arkansas was assembling a roster with all 13 scholarship spots open. That process and plan is starting to take shape with two high-profile commitments this week. Former Florida Atlantic guard Johnell Davis, the No. 3 overall transfer prospect in the cycle, joins former Tennessee big man Jonas Aidoo as the early additions for the Razorbacks. Calipari also landed a familiar face in former Kentucky center Zvonimir Ivisic. It is a start, but there is still a lot of groundwork to cover before tipoff of the 2024-25 season in November.

Kansas held the No. 1 spot in the transfer portal team rankings midway through the spring window. The Jayhawks are loaded in the backcourt with the addition of four veteran guards, including former Wisconsin standout AJ Storr, who ranks as the No. 4 overall transfer prospect of the cycle. A two-time transfer, Storr led the Badgers with 16.8 points per game this past season. Former Alabama sophomore Rylan Griffen played a key role in the run to the Final Four with 11.2 points per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range. Kansas may have lost the top ranking in the transfer portal race, but the Jayhawks are the way-too-early favorite for the 2024-25 season.

Indiana secured the No. 2 overall transfer prospect of the 2024 spring window as former Arizona big man Oumar Ballo provided a much-needed major boost for head coach Mike Woodson and the Hoosiers. All four of the incoming transfers already secured by Indiana are positioned inside the top 150 of the updated player rankings. While Ballo provides a huge presence inside for the Hoosiers, the addition of three talented guards fortifies the roster. Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and former Washington State combo guard Myles Rice joins fellow standout freshman and Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle en route to Indiana for the 2024-25 campaign.
