Next week’s NBA Draft Combine (May 12-19 in Chicago) could have a major imprint on the college basketball transfer portal. Numerous high-level hoopers are going through the NBA Draft process, and that feedback will be essential to shape their stay-or-go decisions.
Cam Christie (Minnesota), Jaylen Wells (Washington State), Coleman Hawkins (Illinois), Jaxson Robinson (BYU), Chaz Lanier (North Florida), Trevon Brazile (Arkansas), Jamir Watkins (Florida State), Garwey Dual (Providence), Baba Miller (Florida State), Arthur Kaluma (Kansas State), Ugonna Onyenso (Kentucky) and Wooga Poplar (Miami) are among the biggest transfers who were invited to the Chicago-based NBA Draft combine or G-League Elite Camp.
Some of college basketball’s biggest programs still have major needs to fill, and some fortunate stay-or-go decisions after the NBA Draft Combine have been the secret sauce for some of the best teams, in recent history, to elevate into a new tier.
A player going through the NBA Draft Combine process and then eventually withdrawing their name and returning to school can be a massive boost for a roster.
Think about Illinois getting Coleman Hawkins and Terrence Shannon back after the NBA Combine last season and both putting together awesome seasons in Champaign. The same for Clemson and All-ACC big man PJ HallCreighton getting both Trey Alexander and Ryan Kalkbrenner back was huge for the Bluejays.
While those NBA Draft prospects go through the process, numerous coaching staffs are tweaking their portal boards as their roster changes and players commit to other schools. Baylor, Wake Forest, Villanova, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn, and North Carolina in particular are very intriguing programs to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
