Tuesday saw a full slate of NBA summer action with the California Classic and Salt Lake City Summer League both in swing. Highlighted by Jaylen Wells’ buzzer-beating winner for Memphis, here’s a sampling of the top individual performers:
Salt Lake City Summer League
Jaylen Wells, Memphis Grizzlies
Wells didn’t shoot particularly well (9-for-23) but the second-round pick from Washington State came through when it mattered for the Grizzlies, capping his 12-point fourth quarter with the game-winning floater to edge Philadelphia 87-85 at the buzzer.
Wells scored 27 points to lead all scorers, combining with UConn product Cam Spencer (18 points, eight assists, seven rebounds) as Memphis clawed back from an early 18-point deficit.

Ousmane Dieng and Dillon Jones, Oklahoma City Thunder
OKC’s forward tandem filled up the box score in a 98-75 rout of Utah, combining to amass 41 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and seven 3-pointers.
It was something of a homecoming for Jones (21 points, 7-for-8 FGs), who starred less than an hour up the road from Salt Lake City at Weber State before the Thunder took him 26th overall. One of the most versatile players in recent college history, last season’s Big Sky MVP played his usual all-around game with an additional seven rebounds and four assists while splashing all three 3-point attempts.
Dieng needed 10 more shots to score one less point (20, 8-for-18 FGs) than Jones. But, in a welcome sign after shooting just 28% on 3s during his first two seasons with the Thunder, he hit on 4-for-6 from long range to go with five rebounds and five assists.
California Classic
Stephon Castle, San Antonio Spurs
Castle did nothing to dissuade doubts about his outside shot with misses on 11 of 13 attempts beyond six feet in the Spurs’ 89-67 win over China, including all six 3-point attempts.
But the athleticism and defensive skills that prompted San Antonio to take him fourth overall were also readily apparent. His power dunk in traffic drew early cheers from the Sacramento crowd, and his Jose Alvarado-esque chasedown steal in the open court provided tantalizing insight into his potential as a perimeter ravager.
Castle finished with three steals overall to go with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Bryce McGowens, Charlotte Hornets
A deep reserve in his first two seasons with the Hornets, McGowens thoroughly enjoyed his rare role as go-to scorer in Charlotte’s 86-82 victory over Sacramento.
His steal-and-slam to snap a tie midway through the fourth quarter kicked off a personal binge that saw him score 12 of Charlotte’s final 20 points. Feasting at the line (9-for-12) while drilling a pair of 3s, McGowens finished with a game-high 29 points on just 17 shots.
