The college basketball transfer portal closes next Wednesday — not just for undergraduate transfers like last year, for everybody. The days of Cam Spencer entering the transfer portal in late May are, presumably, over. The days of Paul Mulcahy entering the transfer portal in the middle of June (!) are, hopefully, over.
Most well-prepared transfers knew that the May 1 deadline was coming down the pipeline. A few others are scrambling at the last second. Miami star Wooga Poplar, a two-year starter for the Hurricanes, entered the transfer portal Thursday.
The updated rule has already kickstarted some late movement on the portal front with the deadline less than a week away. Even some hoopers who are currently going through the NBA Draft process are expected to put their names into the transfer portal before Wednesdat, just to cover their bases if the feedback from the league is not up to par.
Buckle up.
After Ohio State’s Felix Okpara committed Thursday to Tennessee, 32 of the top 50 players in the transfer portal are off the board. But the caliber of players who have become available in the last few hours are on the same tier as some of the top available players left in the portal. There are needle-movers available and more could be coming down the chute.
