The college basketball transfer portal opened one month ago as a record-setting pace of movement ensued. More than 1,700 players — including 13 former McDonald’s All-Americans — entered during the first four weeks of the spring transfer window. While the rate of entries has slowed down a bit since the end of the 2023-24 season, there are plenty top-100 transfer portal prospects still left on the board.
The early race in the 2024 college basketball transfer portal team rankings is starting to take shape as commitments stack up. Twelve high-major programs already hold commitments from at least three transfers this spring with more than 20 programs securing two portal prospects up to this point.
More than half of the updated top-100 transfer portal players from this 2024 cycle remain uncommitted, which means there will still be plenty of movement in the team rankings. The college basketball spring transfer portal window remains open until May 1.

Below is a look at the early top 20 college basketball transfer portal team rankings as of Thursday (April 18) at 4:05 ET:
20. Syracuse Orange — 20.92
19. DePaul Blue Demons — 21.17
18. Providence Friars — 21.41
17. Iowa State Cyclones — 21.50
After leading Iowa State to its second Sweet 16 appearance in three seasons as head coach, T.J. Otzelberger is reloading the Cyclones roster hoping to make a deep run in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Iowa State added a trio of mid-major transfers since the spring window opened. Former Charlotte big man Dishon Jackson headlines the early haul.
16. Nebraska Huskers — 22.06
Nebraska made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014, but lost a handful of key pieces to its core — some of which exhausted their eligibility, and others that transferred out. Fred Hoiberg is already making moves in the portal with former Rutgers freshman Gavin Griffiths committing to the Huskers on Tuesday.
T-13. LSU Tigers — 22.19
LSU made progress under second-year head coach Matt McMahon this past season and looks to continue that momentum into the 2024-25 campaign with hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament. Former UT Martin point guard Jordan Sears, one of the top scorers and playmakers in the portal, joined the Tigers transfer haul last week.
T-13. Miami Hurricanes — 22.19
Jim Larranaga is back for his 41st season as a college basketball coach and 14th at Miami. The Hurricanes already made two key moves in the transfer portal this spring, including the addition of former Virginia Tech big man Lynn Kidd, a two-time transfer that remains in the ACC for his final year of eligibility.
T-13. Missouri Tigers — 22.19
After matching its lowest single-season win total (8) in almost 60 years and going winless against SEC opponents, Missouri is in desperate need of upgrades to its roster ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The Tigers already have a pair of four-star transfers committed, including former Iowa veteran point guard Tony Perkins.
Transfer portal commits: 2
Alabama hit big in the transfer portal to help its efforts in reaching the Final Four for the first time in program history this past season. Now, head coach Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide look to replicate that heading into the 2024-25 campaign. Alabama already has two transfers committed this spring with both ranking among the latest top-100 prospects in the portal. Former USF small forward Chris Youngblood, the Co-Player of the Year in the American Athletic Conference, gives the Crimson Tide another scoring threat. Alabama received its first transfer commitment from former Pepperdine guard Houston Mallette in March prior to the Final Four.
Transfer portal commits: 3
Texas lost four scholarship players to the transfer portal during this spring window, but made several counter moves to try and limit the damage. The Longhorns grabbed former Arkansas shooting guard Tramon Mark as one of the best available scoring threats in the portal at the time and headliner of their early haul. Head coach Rodney Terry also picked up a commitment from former Indiana State point guard Julian Larry, who led the Sycamores in assists and steals while shooting 52.5% from the field this past season.
Transfer portal commits: 2
Georgetown suffered its third consecutive single-digit win season in 2023-24. First-year coach Ed Cooley has his work cut out for him as he tries to rebuild the Hoyas into a perennial NCAA Tournament team. While Georgetown continues to make moves in high school recruiting, it is also supplementing the roster with transfer additions. Former Harvard standout and Ivy League Rookie of the Year Malik Mack joined the Hoyas’ haul on Wednesday as the likely starting point guard for the 2024-25 season. Georgetown also received an early commitment from former TCU small forward Micah Peavy.
Transfer portal commits: 2
New head coach Jake Diebler got the keys to the Ohio State program after serving as the interim for the final month of the 2023-24 season. The Buckeyes lost some key pieces to the transfer portal, but countered those departures with two massive additions so far in April. Former South Carolina guard Meechie Johnson, who started his college career at Ohio State, is set to return to Columbus for his final year of eligibility. The Buckeyes also added former five-star Kentucky big man Aaron Bradshaw to the mix.
Transfer portal commits: 4
New Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey wasted no time getting to work in the transfer portal upon his arrival from Charleston in late March, bringing with him a pair of former Cougars, including top scorer Reyne Smith and center James Scott. However, the big addition so far for Louisville is former James Madison combo guard Terrence Edwards Jr., who ranks among the top 60 transfer prospects in the class after leading the Dukes in scoring this past season.
Transfer portal commits: 3
Maryland took a step back under second-year head coach Kevin Willard during the 2023-24 season. The Terrapins lost 13 of their last 20 games since the start of January before focusing their attention on a reset for the next campaign. Maryland already has a trio of transfer commitments locked in with former Belmont leading scorer Ja’Kobi Gillespie headlining the early haul. The Terrapins also welcome home Maryland native and former Virginia Tech shooting guard Rodney Rice. Soon-to-be fifth-year senior Selton Miguel, a two-time transfer with experience at Kansas State and USF, is en route to Maryland as well.
Transfer portal commits: 3
Penny Hardaway faces added pressure to take the next step at Memphis in 2024-25. The Tigers reached at least 20 wins in each of his six seasons, but have yet to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. A trio of incoming transfers could help Memphis hit another gear with former Tulsa shooting guard PJ Haggerty among those additions. The second-leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference this past season, Haggerty averaged 21.2 points per game. Memphis also added some size in former Illinois power forward Dain Dainja set to join the roster next year, too.
Transfer portal commits: 3
Ole Miss got on a bit of a hot streak in the transfer portal within the past week, landing three new commitments from prospects in the latest top-100 rankings. Former Seton Hall small forward Dre Davis became the most recent pickup on Wednesday for head coach Chris Beard and the Rebels. The soon-to-be fifth-year senior has more than 1,110 career points and shoots almost 47% from the field. Ole Miss also added two power forwards to the mix for the 2024-25 season in former UNC Greensboro standout Mikeal Brown-Jones and Belmont star Malik Dia.
Transfer portal commits: 2
Indiana landed the No. 1 overall transfer prospect of the 2024 spring window on Tuesday as former Arizona big man Oumar Ballo made his move to the Hoosiers. The First Team All-Pac-12 selection joins another standout transfer from that league in former Washington State combo guard Myles Rice, who earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors this past season. Indiana opted to retain Mike Woodson despite missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his three-year tenure in Bloomington. The Hoosiers remain in the hunt for additional transfers ahead of a crucial 2024-25 campaign.
Transfer portal commits: 4
Illinois is capitalizing on momentum from its first Elite Eight appearance in almost two decades by putting together a strong transfer portal haul for the 2024-25 season. The Fighting Illini needed to add scoring, as well as depth, with Second Team All-American selection Terrence Shannon Jr. and others exhausting their eligibility. Former Arizona point guard and top 30 overall transfer Kylan Boswell headlines the group of newcomers for Illinois. Head coach Brad Underwood also secured former Notre Dame power forward Carey Booth as the second top-100 transfer addition.
Transfer portal commits: 3
After finishing with a losing record for the first time in eight seasons and first under head coach Mike Cronin, UCLA went to work early in the transfer portal to secure several prized commitments. The Bruins got their point guard in former Louisville standout Skyy Clark as the first addition. Top 10 overall transfer prospect Kobe Johnson opted to make the crosstown move from rival USC as the headliner for UCLA. That latest transfer commitment that pushed the Bruins toward the top of the rankings came from former Oklahoma State power forward Eric Dailey. All three of the newcomers rank among the top 65 overall transfer prospects in the portal cycle.
Transfer portal commits: 3
Kansas has no shortage of ball-handlers for next season and added an elite scorer to the mix on Thursday to jump up to No. 1 in the transfer team rankings. The Jayhawks snagged two of the top point guards in the transfer portal in former South Dakota State standout Zeke Mayo and former Florida Gator Riley Kugel. Veteran guard Dajuan Harris Jr. already stated he will return to Lawrence for a fifth season, likely giving Kansas a loaded backcourt for the 2024-25 campaign. The Jayhawks also landed former Wisconsin shooting guard AJ Storr, who ranks No. 3 overall in the 2024 transfer class.
