CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – Seven SIU men’s basketball have announced their intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens Monday.
Many of the departures come a couple of weeks after the school parted ways with head coach Bryan Mullins. Mullins led the Salukis to a 19-12 record, including a sixth-place finish in a tight Missouri Valley Conference.
Troy D’Amico, Scottie Ebube, Clarence Rupert, A.J. Ferguson, Code Hornecker, Kennard Davis Jr. and Jarrett Hensley all announced their intention to enter the portal. D’Amico, Ferguson and Rupert all started more than 20 times in 2023-24.
D’Amico averaged 9.2 points per game with 2.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds. Rupert averaged 7.5 points per game and a team-leading 5.7 rebounds.
The Salukis also lost star guard Xavier Johnson to graduation. Johnson led SIU’s squad in many categories, with 22.2 points per game, the fifth best part in all of college basketball (as of 3/18). He also averaged 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Three other Salukis are also out of NCAA eligibility, including graduate student Trent Brown who started in every contest this season.
Combining graduates and transfer portal entries, the Salukis only retain three players on their roster.
The three remaining players are Jovan Stulic, Trey Miller and Sheridan Sharp. Stulic was the most notable of the three this season, playing in 20 games, averaging 4.1 points per game with 2.5 rebounds. Miller also played in 24 games while Sharp, a freshman, only featured four times.
SIU has yet to announce a replacement coach for the departed Mullins. The NCAA transfer portal officially opened on Monday, March 18.
