Amid an excellent 16-7 start to the season, the Philadelphia 76ers have rewarded president of basketball operations Daryl Morey with a new contract.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Morey has agreed to an extension that runs through the 2027-28 season.
Morey’s original deal with the Sixers, signed in November 2020, was a five-year pact that ran through the 2024-25 season.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported at the time Morey was estimated to be making “in excess of $10 million annually” from the 76ers.
Wojnarowski noted Morey’s new contract is now aligned with the deal for first-year head coach Nick Nurse.
There was some concern about what this season was going to look like for the 76ers amid all of the offseason drama with James Harden. The former NBA MVP wound up being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 31 in a deal that landed the Sixers Marcus Morris Sr., Robert Covington, Nicolas Batum, KJ Martin, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and another first-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder.
A breakout season from Tyrese Maxey, who was the first draft pick made by Morey after he was put in charge of the front office, has given Philadelphia the second star who could play with Joel Embiid that the franchise needed.
Maxey and Embiid have combined to average 59.9 points, 13.2 rebounds and 15.6 rebounds per game this season. Their depth is better than in previous years thanks in large part to the players Morey received in the Harden deal.
Time will tell if this is the season the Sixers finally get past the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, but there’s no denying that Morey has put them in a better spot through his first three-plus seasons than where they were before he was hired.
