Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A Monroe High School student collapsed during a high school basketball game Wednesday evening.
Around 5:30 p.m., authorities responded to John James Audubon School No. 33, where a 15-year-old boy reportedly went into cardiac arrest during a junior varsity basketball game between Monroe and School of the Arts.
With the help of an AED, a school safety officer and athletic trainer successfully revived the boy, who was responsive when being taken into the ambulance.
Under New York state law, all schools must be equipped with at least one AED.
The Rochester City School District said there's been a strong focus on ensuring the availability of multiple regularly checked and updated units.
Just last month, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation requiring youth sports programs to establish an AED implementation plan.
We're told the boy is receiving treatment at Strong Memorial Hospital. 13WHAM will provide updates on his condition as they become available.
