The North Carolina Tar Heels and UConn Huskies, two college basketball powerhouses with legendary histories, face off Tuesday night in a battle of top-10 teams at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, in the Jimmy V Classic.
After a 7-0 hot start to the season, UConn cooled off in a low-scoring loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. The Huskies scored their fewest points in a game this season in the 69-65 match. UConn star guard Tristen Newton scored nearly half of the Huskies’ total with a season-high 31 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Jayhawks.
North Carolina, meanwhile, continued its winning streak after a 78-70 win over Florida State. Despite a slow start to the game, the Tar Heels went on an impressive 22-0 run midway through the second half to beat the Seminoles and start 1-0 in the ACC. Guard R.J. Davis paced UNC once more with 27 points.
The two sides now square off at the Garden with 7-1 records, their top-flight guards and a top-10 rank on the line in a rare early-season match-up between college basketball blue bloods.
