SU football coach Fran Brown’s message to the crowd here at the Dome: “Syracuse! I’m so happy to be here. I can’t wait to have your support during football season. Let’s cheer these guys on all the way through March Madness. Go Orange!”
A big sigh of relief at the JMA Dome as Syracuse holds off the Big Red down the stretch to improve to 6-3. Judah Mintz and Quadir Copeland punctuated the game with two big dunks before the clock expired.
Judah Mintz led Syracuse with 28 points. He had a career-high five 3-pointers against Cornell. Chris Bell added five from distance as well and had a total of 19 points. Justin Taylor added 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Orange. Maliq Brown had a tremendous day on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Benny Williams did not play for Syracuse.
The Orange return to the court Saturday afternoon in Washington D.C. against old Big East rival Georgetown.

J.J. Starling hit a jumper in the paint to put SU up by 5 with just under 2:00 remaining. A big shot for a guy who has struggled on the offensive end tonight.

2:40 remaining: Syracuse 71, Cornell 68
Oh my. Cornell’s Isaiah Gray just threw down a nasty one-handed jam over Syracuse’s Kyle Cuffe. Cornell is not going away quietly, folks. Buckle up.
3:53 remaining: Syracuse 71, Cornell 65
It feels like Syracuse is, for lack of a better term, getting away with one here. Cornell is hanging around and is in the bonus. SU has to be careful about fouling down the stretch.
Chris Bell hit a nice step-back jumper on a possession where it felt like it had to score. He has 19 points, including five 3′s. Cornell answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 8, but J.J. Starling answered with a drive to put SU up by 10.

9:20 remaining: Syracuse 64, Cornell 54
The Orange are keeping Cornell at bay here with Chris Bell making shots and Maliq Brown grabbing boards, he’s up to nine rebounds on the night. Justin Taylor drilled a 3-pointer in that last sequence as well. He has 13 points.

3:00 remaining: Syracuse 33, Cornell 25
Justin Taylor connected with Naheem McLeod for the play of game so far on a pretty alley-oop. Taylor has 8 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
I know I sound like a broken record here, but Cornell is getting a lot of open 3-point shots but just isn’t connecting on them. The Big Red is 3-of-17 from beyond the arc. Cornell does maintain a 14-12 lead in the paint.
Just an FYI, Benny Williams has not checked into the game yet. He is in uniform and on the bench.

14:49 remaining: Syracuse 10, Cornell 8
Judah Mintz has put home two shots from beyond the arc with Chris Bell adding a 3-pointer as well. Cornell is not afraid to take 3′s but aren’t connecting so far. The Big Red are 2-of-7 from distance.
Hello from the JMA Dome, friends. Looking forward to what should be an interesting matchup here tonight.
Cornell can flat-out score and is not shy about shooting the three-pointer. Almost 48% of Cornell’s field goal attempts come from outside the 3-point line. It’s a rate that ranks 12th in the country. But even though Cornell shoots a more than respectable 35.2% as a team from 3-point range, it’s inside the line where the Big Red really excels.
Cornell, as a team, makes 63.7% of its 2-point shots. That ranks second in the nation. In comparison, Syracuse ranks 251st nationally in 2-point percentage at .477.
Here is Syracuse’s starting 5 for tonight:
G – Judah Mintz G – JJ Starling F – Justin Taylor F – Chris Bell C – Naheem McLeod
New Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown is set to address the crowd here tonight in his first public appearance at the JMA Dome. Brown will speak during the 12:00 television timeout.
