The Missouri men’s basketball team returns to Columbia and hosts Wichita State on Sunday afternoon – its final game at Mizzou Arena in nearly four weeks. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
PROMOTIONS
• Coach Norm Stewart will be honored during halftime’s game for his 30 years of dedication and creating Coaches vs. Cancer with the NABC.
• The Bank of Missouri Teddy Bear Toss, in support of the Salvation Army, is also set for Sunday.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
• Missouri has won its last three games to improve to 6-2 on the season.
• The Tigers are coming off a 71-64 road victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
Sean East II has led Mizzou in scoring in 5-of-8 games. Overall, he leads MU in both points (16.1) and assists (2.8).
Noah Carter is second with 13.0 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds, while Nick Honor also scores in double figures with 11.4 points.
• The Tigers are averaging 74.6 points per game, while allowing 66.6 points.
ABOUT THE SHOCKERS
• The Tigers and Shockers have met on six prior occasions with Mizzou claiming 5-of-6 victories.
• Missouri rallied for an 88-84 victory at Wichita State last season.
• MU trailed 10 points with five minutes remaining before a late rally pushed the game to overtime. Noah Carter and Sean East II combined to score 26 of the team’s final 33 points in the victory.
• Wichita State earned its lone victory in the series two years ago with a 61-55 win at Mizzou Arena.
TIGERS VERSUS AAC
• Missouri is 7-3 all-time against the American Athletic Conference since its formation in 2013.
• Under Coach Gates, the Tigers are 2-1 versus the conference, defeating Wichita State and UCF last season and falling to Memphis earlier this year.
EARLY-SEASON GAINS
• The Tigers have put together some resume bullet points early in the season.
• Missouri is one of just two schools in the nation with two road victories over power-conference schools after wins at Minnesota and Pittsburgh.
• In fact, it marks the first time since 2003-04 that Missouri has two road wins in non-conference play and first time since 1991-92 with two over power-conference foes.
NEW LOOK TIGERS ON THE GLASS
• Missouri is quickly proving they are the not the same team from a year ago in rebounding.
• The Tigers have outrebounded their opponent in 5-of-8 games this season. Last year, Mizzou won the battle on the glass just twice in 35 games.
• Perhaps the team’s most impressive day on the boards came on Tuesday. Facing a Pittsburgh team that ranked first nationally in rebounds (48.5) and third in rebounding margin (+17.5), MU finished with a 36-33 edge on the glass.
Noah Carter leads the team with 6.6 boards per game, while Caleb Grill is second with 5.3.
BLOCK PARTY
• Another sign of Mizzou’s strong presence inside this season is its ability to reject shots.
• The Tigers currently rank second nationally with 6.8 blocks per game.
• In their win over South Carolina State on Nov. 22, the Tigers set a school record with 12 blocks, topping the previous standard of 11, set three times and most recently in 2015.
Aidan Shaw leads the Tigers and ranks 38th in the country with 2.12 blocks per game, while Noah Carter is 89th nationally at 1.62 per game.
20-POINT THREAT IN SEAN EAST
• Graduate guard Sean East II has saved his best for last in 2023-24.
• East leads the Tigers with 16.1 points per game, eclipsing 20 points four times this season.
• His four 20-point games are double the total he had in his first three seasons combined.
• In fact, it marks the first time that a Tiger has eclipsed 20 points in four of the season’s first eight games since Jordan Clarkson in 2013-14.
3-POINT EDGE
• The Tigers’ success this season has come from hitting their shots beyond the arc.
• Missouri ranks 37th nationally and third in the SEC with 9.5 triples per game, while placing fourth in the league with a clip of 35.3.
• Defensively, MU is allowing only 6.5 makes per game with a mark of 30.5 percent.
• Overall, the Tigers rank 19th nationally with 24 more makes this season than their opponent.
YOUR HONOR
• Graduate Nick Honor has led the Tigers from beyond the arc throughout the season.
• Honor leads Mizzou with 21 made 3-pointers, making 46.7 percent from beyond the arc.
• The guard ranks 26th nationally with his 3-point clip of 46.7 and 93rd with 2.62 makes per game.
• Overall, Honor is third on the team with 11.4 points per game.
