The Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards match up Monday night in a duel of the NBA’s bottom two teams at Little Caesars Arena.
One must walk away with a win, no matter how hard each side may try otherwise. And a dreadful losing streak will end: The Pistons have lost 13 in a row compared to the Wizards’ nine-game skid.
Cade Cunningham leads the Pistons at 21.4 points per game on just 40.3% shooting and 7.1 assists against an NBA-leading 4.8 turnovers (no other player averages more than 4.1). He’s up to 33% shooting on 3-pointers with 1.9 makes on 5.9 attempts per game, and gets to the foul line 4.4 times per game (88.7% shooting).
Yet Cunningham is one of three Pistons to rank in the bottom 16 out of 197 qualified players in effective field goal percentage this season: Killian Hayes is 191st, seventh worst, at 44.8 eFG%, Cunningham ranks 187th at 45.2 and Ausar Thompson is 182nd at 46.3. (Hayes ranked last in the NBA a season ago at 42.6 — no other player was worse than 46.5 among 197 players who averaged at least 20 minutes and played 55 games. Hayes also ranked last out of 196 players in 2021-22 at 43.1 eFG%.)
Jordan Poole, the former Michigan guard now in his first season with the Wizards, is one spot worse than Thompson with a 46.1 eFG%. Poole, 24, is shooting 39.9% overall and 28.6% on 3-pointers in averaging 17.7 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 turnovers in 29.8 minutes per game over 15 appearances.

Flint native Kyle Kuzma makes his homecoming as Washington’s leading scorer at a career-best 22.9 points per game on 47.4% shooting. The 28-year-old is shooting a career-best 36.8% on 3s with 2.4 makes on 6.6 attempts per game, and averaging a career-high 4.6 assists. He signed a 4-year, $90 million contract this past summer ($22.5 million average annual salary).
The Pistons are 26th in offensive rating (109.4) and 23rd in defensive rating (116.6). Washington is 23rd on offense (111.5) and last in defense — four points worse than the Pistons at 120.6.

Jordan Poole is listed questionable (left ankle sprain) after sitting out Saturday’s blowout loss to Atlanta, and backup point guard Delon Wright remains out (left knee sprain).
COMING SOON: Pistons have desperately needed Bojan Bogdanovic back. That’s close to a reality.
