Daily Dish: Circling college basketball's best point guards — so far – 247Sports

Marquette wizard Tyler Kolek entered the season as the unquestioned top dawg on the point guard power rankings. He’s lived up to all the hype, steering the Golden Eagles to a sparkling 5-1 start while averaging 13.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.3 rebounds amid Marquette’s daunting non-conference schedule.
Kolek is playing brilliant basketball. Purdue and Illinois smartly tried to take away Marquette’s sharp-shooting assassins, so Kolek destroyed ‘em with a barrage of drives. UCLA brought the pressure like hyenas and fills the paint with arms and legs, so Kolek smartly drew two defenders and sprayed the ball out to Marquette’s snipers. Kolek takes what the defense is giving him and smashes the opposition over the head with it time and time again.
Kolek would be the hands-down frontrunner for the Bob Cousy Award if the season ended today, but he’s not the only floor general who is absolutely balling. Kolek has done nothing to dissuade those who believe he’s the best point guard in the country, but legitimate arguments can be made for a bunch of candidates.
Kolek’s top preseason challengers included studs like Kansas’ Dajuan Harris, Virginia’s Reece Beekman, Kansas State’s Tylor Perry, Texas’ Max Abmas, Alabama’s Mark Sears, Duke’s Tyrese Proctor, Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard, USC’s Isaiah Collier, UC Santa Barbara’s Ajay Mitchell, Maryland’s Jahmir Young and Northwestern’s Boo Buie. That hasn’t changed after three weeks of hoops because all of them have been just fine so far.
However, there are plenty of other red-hot floor generals who have either rocketed onto the scene or firmly cemented their already-shiny Case for the Cousy:
Tier I: Unquestioned alphas
Tier II: Emerging stars
