Columbia, Mo. – The Missouri men’s basketball team fell in the waning moments to Jackson State on Sunday night at Mizzou Arena. MU falls to 3-2 on the season, while Jackson State claims their first victory of the campaign, improving to 1-5.
Nick Honor posted a team-leading 17 points, while Caleb Grill chipped 15 points and seven rebounds. Jesus Carralero Martin also snagged seven rebounds, dishing out a season-best six assists along the way.
Neither team was able to take control in the first half, with both teams exchanging runs throughout the first 20 minutes. Jackson State took a five-point lead at the midpoint of the half with the help of a 10-2 run.
Mizzou would answer with a 14-1 burst of their own, capped off with a pair of three pointers from Noah Carter and Curt Lewis, taking the largest lead of either side in the first period. JSU took advantage of six opportunities from the charity stripe down the stretch, nailing five of them, cutting into Missouri’s lead at the break, 37-34.
Over the course of the second half, Jackson State slowly chipped away at Mizzou’s lead, turning what was at one point an eight-point deficit into a two-point lead with seven minutes remaining. The next six minutes saw Mizzou embark on a 12-4 run, sparked by a three-pointer by Caleb Grill, taking a 71-65 lead with 1:17 remaining.
Jackson State, however, would outscore the Tigers, 8-1, in the last minute of the contest, scoring with 5.4 seconds left to secure the 73-72 victory.
The Jackson State defense was able to take advantage of 26 points off a season-high 18 Missouri turnovers, negating Mizzou’s 49.1 percent shooting in the contest.
