Diamond Hawthorne recorded a double-double against Texas College on Nov. 7.
The Wiley University women’s basketball team was victorious in the final three games of their opening homestand Nov. 7-11 at Alumni Gymnasium.
Wiley 62, Texas College 55
The Lady Wildcats held the Lady Steers to a 32.8 shooting percentage while it hit 38 percent of its shots. Wiley out rebounded Texas College 43-31. It lost the turnover battle 18-14.
Diamond Hawthorne recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cailan Hale followed with 10 points and five rebounds. Jay’lann Myles provided eight points, four rebounds, two steals and a block. Tamia Dolls added nine points and two steals. Kiersten Harris recorded a team-high four assists.
Wiley 61, Arkansas Baptist 55
For the second time this season, they overcame a fourth quarter deficit. It’s also the third game which they held their opponent under 60 points.
Wiley University was outshot 39.6 percent to 33.8 percent. It was outrebounded 41-37 but outrebounded the Lady Buffaloes 13-9 on the offensive glass. The Lady Wildcats won the turnover battle, forcing 28 and committing 15.
Jamiya Eaddy led all scorers with 15 points and led the team with eight rebounds. She also added three assists and two steals. Ashunti Cooper followed with a career-high 12 points. She hit two key 3-pointers which helped the Lady Wildcats rally. Kiersten Harris led the team with six assists while contributing nine points, five rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 43-39 entering the fourth quarter. Cooper hit a jumper with less than eight minutes left to pull Wiley within two. With 6:35 left in the game she hit a 3-pointer to give them the lead. Eaddy added a 3-pointer to extend the advantage to four. With 1:29 left, Cooper extended the lead to seven with a 3-pointer.
Wiley 69, Centenary College 35
The Lady Wildcats held Centenary to a 17.5 shooting percentage — only allowing it to hit on 10 of its 57 field goal attempts. The Ladies missed all 12 of their 3-point attempts. Wiley shot 48.1 percent and made three of seven 3-point attempts.
Seven turnovers allowed Centenary to compete in the first quarter. A jump shot by Elizabeth Camacho gave the Lady Wildcats a 12-10 lead with 57 seconds remaining. Jamiya Eaddy made an off-balance 3-pointer to increase the lead to seven.
The Lady Wildcats (5-1) took control in the second quarter as they scored the first 13 points, giving them a total run of 20. The Ladies didn’t score until 4:12 left in the quarter – which was a drought of over seven minutes. They only hit one of their 13 field goal attempts. Wiley held a commanding 37-13 halftime lead.
Eaddy led the Lady Wildcats with 13 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with Diamond Hawthorne at seven. She shot 5-for-8 from the field and only played 22 points. Eaddy didn’t play in the fourth quarter with the rest of Wiley University’s starters. Hawthorne followed with nine points, adding two assists, two steals and two blocks to her seven rebounds. Cailan Hale and Camacho each scored eight points off the bench. All 12 Lady Wildcats scored. Kiersten Harris, Alayia Francis and Cailan Hale each had three assists. Hale added five rebounds. Asia Foster contributed three points, four rebounds and three steals.
Wiley will rematch against Texas College in Tyler on Friday.
