I play in the WNBA – I met my wife playing basketball in Russia and now having a child was one of the best… – The US Sun
BREANNA Stewart is aiming to win her third WNBA title – and preparing for the arrival of her second child.
October promises to be a busy month for the New York Liberty superstar in both her personal and professional life.
Breanna will lead the Liberty against the Las Vegas Aces in the high-profile 2023 WNBA Finals, which begin on Sunday.
The power forward, 29, is on a high after winning the league MVP award after moving to the Liberty earlier this year following an illustrious spell at Seattle Storm.
Breanna is also expecting her second child with her wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, this month.
The couple announced on Mother's Day that their daughter, Ruby Mae, would gain a sibling in October.
"When 3 turns to 4… Oct. 2023," they wrote in the caption.
Breanna and Marta, a Spanish women's basketball player, were married in July 2021 after meeting while playing for Russian club Dynamo Kursk during the 2018-19 season.
Breanna soon began to have a crush on Marta but was initially nervous to make the first move.
"She was in Russia way before me, I came later," Breanna told People.
"I was trying to figure out the team…But then, as it went on, I [started] building the relationship with all of my teammates.
"And then having more of an interest in Marta, but still, you know, nervous to do anything."
"You didn't want to mess it up!" Marta joked.
As the pair began to get to know each other, one day their relationship "clicked."
Their relationship blossomed while Breanna was recovering from a devastating Achilles injury.
“I just remember like being in such a place where it was like, you know, something terrible happened, and then at the same time something amazing happened,” Breanna said.
Breanna showed her feelings by flying to Serbia to cheer on Marta in a EuroBasket quarterfinal game.
"I remember, I was posting a thing on Instagram, and all of the sudden, I saw someone standing in front of me, and it was her," Marta recalled.
"For 10 minutes, I was looking at her, like, 'Is this real?'"
Within a whirlwind few months in 2021, the couple were engaged, married and had their first child.
The couple welcomed Ruby Mae on August 9, 2021, just days after Stewart won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with Team USA.
"It was a surreal moment," Breanna recalled.
"You don't see a lot of female athletes, or women's basketball players, being able to be at their highest and also be able to start a family, or have a baby.
"Becoming a mom is bigger than anything else that I've done and I look forward to every beautiful and challenging moment as a family of three."
Now the family is on a new adventure, having moved to New York after a spell in Turkey and with another child on the way.
"For Ruby to be worldwide, to have traveled to many different countries is a luxury that not many have," Breanna says.
"And we want to make sure she's able to see and experience as much as possible so she knows that she can do whatever she wants in this world."
