Both Game 3 of the WNBA semifinals will take place this Friday
Las Vegas took another step toward defending their 2022 WNBA championship on Tuesday night with a thrilling 91-84 victory.
The Michelob Ultra Arena crowd was electric, frequently chanting “MVP” in support of A’ja Wilson, who narrowly missed becoming the second player to win the WNBA’s MVP award in back-to-back seasons. Breanna Stewart secured the award after the tightest vote in the league’s history.
Wilson showcased her brilliance on the court, tallying an impressive 30 points and 11 rebounds. Notably, she became the first player in WNBA history to score at least 30 points in three consecutive postseason games.
Reflecting on her remarkable performance and the MVP outcome, Wilson stated, “This is playoff basketball; these are the moments that we play for… People want to hear: ‘Oh, [not winning MVP] is going to fuel her.’ But I’ve been fueled since I stepped foot in this league.”
In a thrilling matchup on the same day Breanna Stewart secured her second MVP award, the New York Liberty displayed resilience and determination, securing an 84-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA Semifinals.
Sabrina Ionescu led the charge for the Liberty, putting up 21 points and dishing out five assists.
The team’s supporting cast also made significant contributions, with Betnijah Laney adding 20 points (including 15 in the second half) and Courtney Vandersloot contributing 19 points. Remarkably, all five Liberty starters reached double-digit points, highlighting their balanced effort.
Ionescu reflected on the team’s mindset after a loss in the first game of the series, stating, “I think there’s just a different mentality when you’re down one… This was a must-win for us. We weren’t going to lose two at home, especially in front of this crowd that’s supported us all year long.”
The New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun are now tied 1-1 as they head into Game 3 of the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces have asserted their dominance, holding a 2-0 lead against the Dallas Wings in the West.
Excitement is building as both Game 3 semifinals matchups are scheduled for this Friday, September 29.
The Connecticut Sun will host the first game of the night at 7:30 pm ET, followed by the second game at 9:30 pm ET.
After Friday’s games, fans can look forward to Game 4 on Sunday, October 1, with a potential Game 5 slated for Tuesday, October 3.
