NEW YORK — Throughout the 2023 WNBA season, Breanna Stewart has debuted a number of new sneakers from her Puma collection. Among them is a colorway tribute to her daughter, Ruby, a pair of all-red shoes that is also reminiscent of the red slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Stewart’s collection has only continued to evolve since its initial debut last year. And more broadly, in a year full of changes — Stewart’s jump from the Seattle Storm to the New York Liberty and from the West Coast to the East Coast among the biggest — Stewart says her fashion sense has also grown.

Throughout the season, The Athletic has talked to WNBA players about their off-court style as part of our Super Squads project. We provide a glimpse into another facet of players’ lives and highlight more about who they are as individuals. The following exchange occurred after a recent Liberty practice.
How has your style changed since entering the league?
My style has changed a lot since I entered the league. Being really comfortable in what I wear and just knowing you can rock anything as long as you have confidence.
How do you think style has changed, more broadly, around the league?
I think style has changed a lot. I think people are just continuing to take an added interest in style, and fashion. You see it with the tunnel fits. It’s the same thing — we’re basketball players, but we’re continuing to have a brand and reach beyond that.

Do you work with a stylist?
Yes. Courtney Mays. I’ve been working with her really since the start of this calendar year.
Is there one item you can’t live without?
I like my Issey Miyake pants. Everyone needs a pair. I can live without them, but I think everyone should have them. Marta (Xargay Casademont, Stewart’s wife) also got me this Bottega crossbody, which is nice because I can dress it up or dress it down.
Now that you’re living in New York City, do you put more pressure on yourself to make fashion choices that stand out?
I think I have more awareness of being in New York. But I think from last year to this year my fashion has grown. But yeah, I have to make sure when I go out of the house, I’m either in Puma sweats or I look good.
