DUBROVNIK, Croatia – The BYU men’s basketball international trip that saw the Cougars play four games, visit seven cities and travel through three countries concluded this weekend with a stop in Dubrovnik.
With the playing portion of their trip concluded following a victory over KK Split on Thursday evening, BYU spent Friday hopping around islands just outside of Split. The first stop for the group was a shipwreck off the coast off Solta where they snorkeled and paddleboarded around the cove.
They would relocate to the Blue Lagoon of Veli Drvenik Island where they spent the rest of the afternoon snorkeling, swimming and enjoying time on the beach. After arriving back on land, they would make the bus ride down the coast to the gem of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik, in preparation for their final full day of the trip.
Saturday began with a short bus ride from the waterfront hotel to Old Town Dubrovnik, taking a tour of the heart of the city that is enclosed by medieval walls. During the tour, they learned about the history of the stone walls that were built between the 11th and 17th centuries while walking the streets that have appeared in “Game of Thrones”, “Robin Hood” and “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi”.
Next on the itinerary was a boat ride on a replica of a traditional “Karaka” to the island of Lopud. While on the island, they explored the shops near the water, swam in the sea and admired the more than 30 churches that dot the 1.79 square miles of the island. Another short boat ride was followed by an afternoon full of swimming in the sea, jumping off the boat and jet skiing.
They concluded the day with a group dinner overlooking the Adriatic Sea where coaches, staff and student-athletes shared their favorite part of the trip and what they are grateful for.
BYU opens the 2023-24 season on November 6 when the Cougars host Houston Christian at the Marriott Center.
