College basketball transfer portal 2023: Temple guard Damian Dunn hears from Tennessee, Auburn among 14 others – 247Sports

Temple transfer guard Damian Dunn reportedly is one of the hotter commodities in the NCAA transfer portal to tip off the college basketball offseason. The two-time All-AAC player entered the portal Monday and has already received interest from Tennessee, Auburn, Gonzaga, UConn, Miami, Iowa State, NC State, Missouri, Penn State, Villanova, Georgia, Mississippi State, Nebraska and Clemson, among others, according to Jeff Borzello.
The 6-foot-5 guard from Kinston (N.C.) Meadowcreek rated as a three-star recruit in the 2019 class and chose the Owls over offers from Georgia Tech, VCU and others. Dunn, a graduate transfer, has averaged double figures in each of the past three seasons for Temple.
Dunn’s 2022-23 season was his best yet, as he averaged 15.3 points per game, 3.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists on 41.1% shooting from the field as well as 34.8% from 3-point range while earning Third Team All-AAC honors. Dunn has two seasons of eligibility remaining, as he redshirted during the 2019-20 season while the 2020-21 season does not count against him thanks to the NCAA’s COVID-19 blanket waiver. He will, however, still count against his new program’s 13-man scholarship limit.
Dunn left Temple after the Owls went 16-16 this season; head coach Aaron McKie then departed after the campaign. He most notably, this past season, scored 38 points against Vanderbilt and dropped 34 points versus Cincinnati.
In the first year of the portal windows, the college basketball transfer portal begins March 13 and runs until May 11.
Numerous graduate transfers already entered the transfer portal prior to the March 13 opening, but that date kicked off the 60-day window for the rest of the prospective transfers to hop in the portal to examine their options. The one-time transfer rule is still intact, per usual. If a player has not transferred yet, they are immediately eligible.
“I wish that it would start a little later than the day right after Selection Sunday,” Illinois head coach Brad Underwood told Fox Sports in September. “You would hope you don’t have someone on your team, as you’re heading to the tournament, who is looking at the portal, but I would also be wrong to say that it won’t happen. Somebody who isn’t playing or getting minutes is going to be looking for a new destination. I’ll be shocked if there’s a tournament team not dealing with that, and look, you have to stay on top of transfers at every moment because that’s essential in building a roster.”

Name, image and likeness is going to be a factor in the transfer portal. It is no coincidence that some of the teams who continue to dominate the transfer portal also have structured NIL opportunities set up.
