MALIBU, Calif. — Pepperdine women’s basketball head coach Tim Hays has resigned his position, effective Monday, August 14, 2023.
“I would like to thank Jim Gash, Tim Perrin and Steve Potts for offering me the opportunity to lead this program," Hays said. "Over the last few months, we have assembled an incredible group of women who will undoubtedly be successful both on and off the court. However, while building a new team and staff, I have additionally taken on the role of caretaker and advocate for both my mother and brother who are dealing with major illnesses. My wife and I are also in the midst of an adoption process that has required my presence and attention, and I have not been available for that. For the past 20 years, I have placed my work as a coach and my team’s needs ahead of my family’s in almost every circumstance. Through these recent events, I have realized how my lack of attention to family and availability has weighed on those I love the most in this world and I must make them the priority. Because of this, I need to step away and be available to my family for this season. For that reason, I am choosing to resign my position as head women’s basketball coach at Pepperdine to relocate closer to my family and properly care for their needs.”

"I want to express my thanks to Coach Hays and offer my prayers for him and his family through these difficult times," Pepperdine Director of Athletics Steve Potts said.
