NBA Rumors: Bucks eyeing young combo guard with one roster spot … – Behind the Buck Pass
Dec 23, 2022; Brooklyn, New York, USA: Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports
After bringing in Robin Lopez and Malik Beasley via free agency, the Milwaukee Bucks currently have just one roster spot left to be filled.
It doesn’t seem like the front office is racing to fill it, as they don’t have to, but recent rumors say that the Bucks are doing their due diligence. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Bucks, Charlotte Hornets, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, and Phoenix Suns are teams that have shown an interest in Edmond Sumner after he was cut by the Brooklyn Nets recently.
Milwaukee’s exploratory interest makes some sense. The team currently does not have a backup point guard behind Jrue Holiday rostered, which is obviously a glaring issue. Sumner isn’t a perfect answer, as he’s more of a combo guard than a pure point guard, but he is quite capable of handling the basketball and making plays on offense.
Sumner suited up in 53 games for the Nets last season after missing the entire 2021-22 season due to an Achilles injury. He averaged 7.1 points while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and a passable 35.6 percent from three while tallying 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. On top of that, the 27-year-old consistently provided a solid amount of energy off of the bench.
Signing Sumner wouldn’t be the worst move in the world for Milwaukee, though this writer would prefer they take a flyer on Kendrick Nunn if they are looking at reclamation projects. Still, Sumner could be a fine piece, as he could give the Bucks more ball-handling, scoring, and energy off of the bench. On a team-friendly deal, which this would certainly be, Sumner would be a fine addition.
It should be noted that while the Bucks have checked in on Sumner, people around the league do believe that the final roster spot will ultimately go to Thanasis Antetokounmpo, per Scotto. Many fans have speculated that perhaps a trade could be coming to clear out some of Milwaukee’s wing depth to make room at other positions, but that is just speculation. If that were to happen, though, it would give the team more open spots to potentially sign both Sumner and Antetokounmpo.
