CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Fighting Illini Basketball fans will have a high-level game to attend at the outset of the 2023-24 season, as Illinois hosts reigning Big East champion Marquette at State Farm Center on Tuesday, Nov. 14, as part of the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games.
“We are excited to play in the Gavitt Games and have what is a big-time match-up with Marquette, the Big East champs,” head coach Brad Underwood said. “This is a game that features two of the storied programs in college basketball with great history, tradition, and support alike. It will be a tremendous early-season test for us, and we fully expect State Farm Center to be rocking come November 14.”
This will be Marquette’s first visit to Champaign in 31 years. Illinois leads the all-time series 9-6, including a 6-2 advantage at home.
The Big Ten Conference and Big East Conference have announced match-ups for the eighth edition of the event, with eight men’s basketball games set during the second week of the season from Nov. 13-17. All contests will be televised on FS1 or BTN, with game times slated to be announced at a later date.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games, which began in 2015, is an early-season series between the two conferences named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the Big East and basketball visionary. The series features games between local opponents as well as attractive intersectional matchups.
This will mark Illinois’ fifth appearance in the Gavitt Tipoff Games following a 2015 visit to Providence, back-to-back home games in 2017 versus DePaul and 2018 against Georgetown, and a 2021 trip to Marquette. The Illini own a 1-3 record in the event.
