College Basketball Transfer Portal: 13 under-the-radar transfers who could make a splash next season – 247Sports

On Tuesday, 247Sports released our top ranking of the top 150 players in the College Basketball Transfer Portal. Given how quick recruitments move in the portal, it’s no surprise that of those ranked in the top 150, only 17 players have yet to announce their transfer destination.
It is also no surprise that many of those who haven’t yet decided (like North Dakota State’s Grant Nelson, the top available player in the portal at No. 3 overall) are also testing the NBA Draft waters.
With the transfer portal rankings now updated, it’s time to take a look at some potential steals from the portal.

While fans of each school know all about their guys, we wanted to give a nod to some transfers that may have gone a little under-the-radar in terms of national coverage by spotlighting 13 players who rank outside of the top 25 transfers who could be in the position to make a huge splash at their new programs.

2022-23 stats: 7.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 26
Bossi’s take: As Todd Golden gets ready for year two on the job at Florida, he’s continuing to rebuild and reshape the Gators’ roster. An absolute must in the portal was finding a big man to replace Colin Castleton and that’s exactly what he’s found in Micah Handlogten. Because he was unknown coming out of high school and went to Marshall, the seven-footer probably hasn’t generated as much buzz as he should. He is a plus rebounder, particularly on the offensive glass, runs the floor pretty well and projects as a high-end defensive player who not only protects the rim but is a threat for steals and deflections. He will have to get stronger and adjust to the speed of the SEC, but the tools to develop into one of the best bigs in the conference are all there and he could prove to be a major steal over the next few seasons.

2022-23 stats: 9.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 32
Bossi’s take: A top 50 player coming out of high school, Tre White showed some flashes of being a great college player during his freshman season. Now he heads to a new program where Kenny Payne and his staff will be looking to make the most of White’s versatility. At 6-foot-8, he can play as a small ball four man or as a big wing. His shooting numbers from deep weren’t great as a freshman, but the stroke looks good. It’s a safe bet that he improves from three in season two. White is physically ready for the ACC and despite only averaging one assist per game as a freshman, he’s actually a guy who can be used to initiate some offense and make plays for others. If that potential as a playmaker can be tapped into, he’ll make a major difference.

2022-23 stats: 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: 45
Bossi’s take: A McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school, it may be stretching it a bit to list Jaden Bradley as an “under-the-radar” transfer. However, he didn’t have the freshman year he was hoping for and looked a bit rusty after finishing out his high school career on the bench due to an injury. Playing for Tommy Lloyd in Tucson, Bradley figures to have the ball in his hands quite a bit more next season and that’s where he’s at his best. Bradley isn’t a spectacular athlete, but he is strong with the ball, sees the floor really well and is a patient decision maker. He’s probably not going to be the most dangerous threat from deep, but once he gets his confidence back, he’ll be a threat to get into the lane to score or kick out to shooters around him.

2022-23 stats: 10.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 51
Bossi’s take: The third highest ranked member of Eric Musselman and the Razorbacks’ No. 3 ranked portal class, Keyon Menifield is a really interesting player. Mostly underrated and pretty overlooked despite a tremendous high school career in Michigan, Menifield had a monster freshman year. He still has to get much stronger and was fairly inconsistent. But when he logged minutes and got to play through mistakes, he was able to do some real damage and had seven games of 16 or more points — including five contests where he had over 21 points. He’s a high-energy guard who is lightning quick off the bounce. And given another summer in the weight room, he has the potential to thrive in Fayetteville.
2022-23 stats: 14.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 53
Bossi’s take: While helping leading his team to a Division II National Championship, Jonathan Pierre emerged as one of the most intriguing prospects in the country. There is always going to be the question about how he’s going to handle the significant step up in competition, especially given his lean frame. However, this guy could be great and hopes are high that he can be an immediate contributor. A very dangerous shooter from deep, he’s got some bounce to him and is a classic late-bloomer who looks ready to take another huge step forward. There could be some early bumps along the way, but he’s got significant upside.
2022-23 stats: 11.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 59
Bossi’s take: The Gophers lost some pretty productive players to the portal and really needed to find a ball handler who can score and create. They’ve got exactly that in Mike Mitchell Jr. Ranked among the top 150 by 247Sports coming out of high school, Mitchell is a scoring point guard whose had two very good years at Pepperdine. He shoots extremely well from deep, can be a clever passer and will stick his nose in there among the big guys to help out on the glass. The most important thing for Mitchell as he makes the move to the Big Ten will be taking care of the ball a little better. If he does that, his impact should be pretty instantaneous in Minneapolis.

2022-23 stats: 16.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 80
Bossi’s take: A first team All-Conference guy in the Missouri Valley, Marcus Domask looks to be a good fit for Brad Underwood and the Illini. The headliner of the incoming transfer group, Domask is an experienced and productive player whose toughness really stands out. He will make some shots from deep and is a pretty good passer. Also, because of his strength, it isn’t crazy to think that he could end up stealing some minutes and creating mismatches as an undersized four. This guy looks primed to earn real minutes and has the maturity to come in and make the most of them.

2022-23 stats: 8.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 82
Bossi’s take: When he was coming out of high school, AJ Storr was well-regarded for his jump shooting from deep and he proved that the reputation was well-earned during his freshman season. A big guard who can really stroke it from deep, Storr looks to be an excellent fit with the Badgers. He’s a sneaky athlete who could really become a problem if he adds to his game off the dribble. But given that he’s going to play in an offense that gets shooters great looks at the basket, its’ not going to be a surprise to see him have a really productive year and be a major contributor as a sophomore.

2022-23 stats: 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 84
Bossi’s take: What’s not to like about the fit of Cormac Ryan in Chapel Hill? The Heels could use some size, experience and shooting in their backcourt and in Ryan they’ve got all of that. We are talking about a guy that has 116 games of experience, has made over 200 threes (at just over 35%) and has done all of it playing in the Pac-12 to start and then the ACC over the last three seasons. He knows what he needs to do in order to be successful and is familiar with the conference he’ll be playing in. So, there’s no reason to expect him to be anything other than a rock-solid player for Hubert Davis.

2022-23 stats: 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 88
Bossi’s take: If Brice Williams can become more consistent, then he could end up one of the biggest steals in the transfer portal. A second team All-Conference USA guy, Williams has terrific size for a wing and is a potentially big-time shooter who has connected on just under 40% of his shots from three thus far in his career. When he’s on, he is really dangerous as he went for 20 or more nine times this past season. If he can stay engaged and aggressive, then his shooting and size should give him a good chance of at least replicating the numbers he’s already put up last season. There’s also upside to his game that will allow him to take things to another level. He is a really nice pickup by the Huskers.

2022-23 stats: 17.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No.89
Bossi’s take: A three-star prospect coming out of high school, Andrew Rohde looked like he would be a steal for St. Thomas. He proved to be all of that and more during his freshman year. While he only ended up shooting 32% from three, he was much better than expected in the other areas of the game on the offensive end while showing some toughness and playmaking. He won’t be asked to do as much for Tony Bennett. As a result, it can be reasonably expected that his three-point percentage will climb up from the 32% clip he shot it at during his first season of college ball. He’s obviously taking a big step up in competition level, so there will likely be an adjustment period. But no matter what level you play on, it is impressive when you go for 20 or more 12 times as a freshman.
2022-23 stats: 11.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 96
Bossi’s take: One of the most improved players in the competitive Mountain West, Keshon Gilbert made huge strides as a sophomore and looks poised to make another jump with his move to the Big 12. While improved numbers aren’t a guarantee, Gilbert has the size and athleticism to play in the Big 12. Also, his ability to create off the dribble as well as knock down shots from beyond the three-point line should be a huge asset in Ames. A fiery competitor, Gilbert plays with an edge to him. If he can cut down on some of the mistakes that his emotional play leads to at times, he could be productive contributor from the moment he takes the floor for the Cyclones.
2022-23 stats: 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
247Sports Transfer Portal ranking: No. 101
Bossi’s take: After taking a bit of a step backwards during his senior season, Avery Anderson is heading back to his home state of Texas where he is looking to use his Covid year to make some real noise. One of the most explosive guards in the Big 12, Anderson has an electric first step and can really put pressure on defenders to stop him from getting into the lane. After improving his jump shooting as a sophomore and junior, Anderson took a step backwards last season. Getting back over 30% from deep is going to be a key to his success at TCU. He’s got some playmaking capabilities, but the 1000-plus point scorer is at his best when he’s looking to get a bucket off the dribble. Jamie Dixon has given his guards a lot of freedom over the past few seasons and Anderson should be a good fit in that system.
