Kyle Morton and Joel Bryant discuss the all-state football teams, basketball playoff projections and recent football coaching hires in the Triangle on this episode of HighSchoolOT Round Table.
Hello everyone. Welcome to high school ot roundtable. I’m Kyle morton joined by Joel, Bryant uh, no major huge topics today, but we just felt like we needed to check in and have one of these to, to touch on a bunch of the stuff that’s kind of happened over these last few weeks, uh, football postseason coverage and then some of the coaching carousel stuff and basketball really cranking up as we have high schools have begun to release our playoff projections of what the brackets will look like for the girls and boys basketball playoffs. So just a few pretty decent topics to touch on today. We’re gonna start with the high school oT all state football team that was just released recently. Um, a big thank you to everyone who helped out with providing stats where they were missing and coaches for nominating and uh, and just all the feedback that we get on this. It’s a, it’s a big project that a lot of us spend some time on. Uh, and it’s, it’s kind of cool to see it all come together. I’m gonna read through just the first team for, for offense, defense, special teams and two way players. And then Joel here are football guy will fill in with some analysis and some thoughts on, on kind of where this all came together and, and why the players that made it did make it. So the first team offense is led by quarterback, jayden Davis of providence day. He’s joined by Hartford County quarterback tv on Rogers. The running backs are Aaron Herring of new Bern state champion and Tyler Mason of Mount Airy, also a state champion. They’re joined in the running back room by christian paris Princeton, the wide receivers. We’ve got three of them Christopher Culliver of maiden heading to U. N. C. Nathan Leacock of Millbrook heading to Tennessee. Noah Rogers of Roseville heading to Ohio State’s with three high major receivers who just made plays every single friday and really just absolute game breaking talents at athlete. We’ve got Josiah McLaurin of clinton at tight end. We have Jack Larson of charlotte catholic. He’s headed to Notre dame. And then the offensive line just filled with power Five recruits. Sullivan Absar of South Point headed to Notre Dame. Reagan McRaney of Chase headed to Duke Sam Pendleton of Reagan headed also to to Notre dame, darien rivers of West charlotte heading to N. C. State and at left tackle. David Sanders of providence day a sophomore but the nation’s top ranked sophomore offensive lineman. He’s got all sorts of offers already but has not committed yet. It will be a bit of a wait before we get a commitment from him I assume. All right. Moving on to the first team defense. The defensive line is made up of Zarian. Jackson Bass of Chambers, Nick martin of East Forsyth A j Richardson of Kings Mountain KJ Sampson of New Bern a state champion of florida state recruit an absolute game record Logan right of Dudley. R. J. Brown at East Forsyth starts our linebackers Chase Christopher of holly Springs headed to Princeton joins him in the linebacker group. And then Ben cutter of east Lincoln. West Virginia recruit who just absolutely dominated that the three a state championship game for east Lincoln and an incredible performance by him. Other linebackers, we’ve got Carson Jenkins of Northern Nash, Michael short of Mallard Creek. A U. N. C. Recruit to Marcus Cooley of Roseville starts out the defensive backfield. He is headed to Maryland after flipping from NC state Darren James Hamilton’s of Mallard Creek and Ellen recruit Sean stone of A. C. Reynolds, the Duke recruit and key andre walker also of East Lincoln of Virginia recruit. He was another one that really stood out in that state championship game along with Qatar as a linebacker and Dante hall from. Yes yes The first team of two way players uh starts off with Tamari Coppedge of Green Central. Uh He is joined by Tavon charisma of chase chris peel of providence today. Angus weaver of polk county and Isaac weaver of andrews. Uh and then scrolling down here to get to special teams. The first team. Uh No surprise in the kicker is Nolan whose er of huff. Clemson recruit. Oh unfair of huff. The punter so huff has the first team. All state kicker and punter. The punt returner is cordell Bartley of doubly another kicker, punter who made it is Jackson more of Marvin Ridge and another punter who made it, Palmer Williams of Davie County, he is headed to Baylor to send off their pants when they stall offensively next year, Joel why don’t you maybe take a deeper dive into some of these guys who made the first team? Yeah, I think um the one that stood out, a lot of people is the first team quarterback kevin Rogers from Hartford County um plays a smaller classification, right? But the numbers are just kind of inescapable, right? Um 30 30 passing touchdowns and 33 rushing touchdowns to start with. That is I don’t know how many other quarterbacks have done 30 and 30 like that before my record books, not that comprehensive but I I can’t I have not been able to find anyone um to recently that’s done that. Um I like how we mixed in all classifications and all associations and some are teams and rankings because I do think in some cases, players from the lower classifications are as good as the players from the upper classifications. I think this is one of those cases. Um Yes, Harford County is playing against smaller teams but he’s also playing with a two way offensive line and playing with two receivers. Right? So it goes both ways. It’s not just, oh he’s only playing these smaller teams. He’s he’s he’s not a smaller team himself. Right? So he’s not gonna have these power five wide receivers of throat. So he’s not gonna have this really big offensive line to protect him. So it goes both ways. And I think that, you know, in general having these two quarterbacks, Jaden Davis and Kevin Rogers as junior is going back next year as first teamers. That’s that’s pretty exciting for next year. Um Across the board, we we have a lot of talent this year um going to play at the next level. Um those wide receivers, you mentioned they’re all power five receivers. Um The offensive line, some really good players. Defensively we had some a lot of 20 sack guys this season, even from defensive tackle spots. So um really set out in that way as well. Um and the huff huff special things. We’ve been talking about it pretty much all year. Um No surprise that they’re both on the first team. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I was gonna hit on it before. You did the fact that both first team all state quarterbacks are coming back next year, really exciting. Um You know, and and for anyone who maybe was doubting the Rogers choice, I mean, he he beat Tarboro in the first game of the year and I think we were able to talk to some people from Tarboro later on in the year and without even bringing it up. They they brought it up, they were like man, that kid’s the best player, we’ve ever seen play against us. So uh he’s the real deal. Um and and we’ll see it again next year when when he returns and jaden Davis recruitment is a huge deal nationally. He has is gonna have his pick of whatever program he wants to out of providence day. We know that five star guy and we know that head coach chad were there at providence day, he has a penchant for, for helping along and helping develop premier quarterbacks to look at his son, Will Greer Sam Hartman from Wake Forest now at Notre Dame, played for him in high school. So um that that’s a that’s a good setup for Davis uh in the short and long term, he’s gonna be a one to watch next year and moving forward wherever he ends up in college. Yeah, it’s really kind of, it’s kind of insane the amount of talent that Province Day has. Um I plan on going down there at some point just to talk to all of them one day. Um So I think it was around that, but yeah, I mean it’s like our team is littered with them. It’s, our team is a lot of New Bern and a lot of province today, it’s a lot of Grimsley, so it’s about the same as you would expect, but typically when those teams are, you know, advancing that far, it’s, you know, that’s gonna be the case, they’re gonna have a lot of the best players. So um yeah, I’m glad that it came out the way it did um we got really good feedback coming across the board. People are excited about it. So I do think the way that we do is is the best way, um, just throwing everyone into a pot and then picking from there. Um, I think that’s the most fair way to do it. And uh, I think, I think it’s a way of spotlighting some of the communities that don’t get the spotlight. Yeah. And if you want to see the whole all state team, the second team for offense, defense to weigh and special teams, the third team and honorable mentions for, for all of those, uh, you can go to high school ot dot com. Those are still posted on our front page right now. Uh, you can see all that, read all the names and, and, and kind of see, you know, which seniors you’re gonna be seeing at the college level next year and then get a feel for which of the underclassmen you’re gonna wanna be looking out for next year when they, when football returns in, in the summer and then games start back in late, august. Yeah, very exciting that, uh, well the off seasons already going by kind of quickly, but we’ll definitely get into that more. I can do the basketball projections if you want. Yeah. I mean, you’re saying the off seasons going by quickly. I’m sitting here thinking we haven’t even hit basketball playoffs yet. So let’s look down those projections a little bit. Um, well, we’re gonna take a look at the four A. On here I think. And like I said with the all state team, if you want to see the entire playoff projections for both girls and boys basketball, those are currently the 2nd and 3rd stories on high school ot dot com in the high school ot app as we speak, so you can check out all four classifications east and west for for girls and boys. Um Yeah so the the we’ll start with the boys. Fly East is currently automatic bids are held by over hills, D. H. Conley, Sanderson, Leesville Road, Chapel Hill Jordan Garner, Clayton, New Hanover, Millbrook, Wakefield, Richmond, Holly springs Green level and Lumberton. The current last five in uh in the four A. East or Athens dr riverside, Durham night dale, Cardinal Gibbons and brought in in the uh first five out. So the team is knocking on the door if they can get some key wins if there are P. I. Goes up uh they’ll be in, that’s Ashley carry Southeast Raleigh Purnell Swett and reigning regional finalist Cleveland. So so Cleveland looking to get back in, the current number one seed is Millbrook in the four A East and uh you look at their record, you might be a little surprised by that but that is mostly driven by their R. P. I. Which is powered by just an outstanding strength of schedule. They’ve played an incredible schedule over there at Millbrook. So uh they have a few losses this year more than some of the other teams that they’re seated ahead of. But the reason is going to be that that R. P. I. That strength of schedule. Yeah. Um It’s it’s it’s kind of it’s it’s interesting that these top programs have really fall into this habit of just like scheduling all these like really good teams. And and I think the while the record doesn’t look very pretty, I think it’s really gonna benefit them um as they get into the playoffs. So that’s still a young team. I mean their best players still sophomore. Um So I mean I fully expect to be very formidable in the playoffs. Um What stands out to me right now is the potential from the Garner Lumberton match up in that little section that holds that could be a really good game I think. Um But what do you think about Richmond being the three seed? I think that makes sense. I think they’re obviously extremely dangerous with paul MacNeil back. That’s uh basically the highest level talent in this bracket. Um And they’re going to be a dangerous dangerous team against anyone. I’m looking at that that Jordan hillside game matched up in the first round. Both those teams I think a little better than their seating. I see those teams a lot. That’s a rivalry I’ve come to come to enjoy to cover um in Durham. Um Yes Jordan has played not quite the strength of schedule that Millbrook has, but not too far off. They played uh a lot of the top teams in the state. Um And then, yeah, I mean, Richmond’s in holly Springs could be an interesting collision course if Richmond can survive the Jordan hillside winner, which I would expect them to their their probably better but a tough challenge. And then, yeah, but Richmond, Holly Springs I think are two of the teams that that we’ve kind of been talking about hearing about and and expecting to be maybe in the regional finals. So they’ll be, they could be playing each other um in the regional quarterfinal wouldn’t be interesting based on the way it’s projected. Currently the for a West folks, it is loaded. Uh So the current automatic bids as we project them right now belong to Mount Tabor East for South Lake, norman cox Mill Grimsley, Southwest, Guilford A. C. Reynolds, alexander, Central North Mecklenburg charlotte Catholic Butler. Myers park, Olympic, Piedmont and Weddington. I just listed two of the very best teams in the state, the reigning state champion in Weddington an olympic team that that has some really high quality wins. A really good Grimsley team that’s been bolstered by uh returns from their football players and currently not even projected a an automatic bid but will certainly be in Chambers another team that has played a tremendous strength of schedule and has just a ridiculous amount of talent right? It’s gonna be a big fight there. The current last five in our Watauga, Porter Ridge are Greek L. Marvin Ridge and Glenn and the current first five out our Sun Valley south called South caldwell, Harding, Mooresville and R. J. Reynolds, the current projected top seed is Mount Tabor. Um North Mecklenburg holds the current to seed And Grimsley Charlotte Catholic Myers Park or in some order, the 34 and five chambers I mentioned not currently an automatic bid, they sit currently at the 10 seed. Uh they would be matched up if the bracket held in the second round against Piedmont. Yeah, this racket is shaping up to be very, very fun. Um I saw, I went down and saw Myers Park and that was impressive. They, in case anyone hasn’t seen them, they basically run out five guys that are just like basically like 65 and up wings and many of them were like four star recruits. Um and it’s uh and they made everything look so easy against an olympic team that was undefeated and that seemed to be in good teams. And then, but on the flip side of that Chambers has be in Myers park right? And then Chambers has lost in overtime to North Meck who was just an incredible team. So those three teams out of charlotte, I cannot wait to see how it shakes out. We don’t know like how exactly the brackets gonna shape together. Currently they’re all on the same side of the bracket, so only one of them would make the regional final as it’s currently projected. Obviously. I mean the odds that are probably unlikely, but yeah, we were talking about this yesterday would be really cool to see one of those teams go out and play Grimsley, Grimsley has not lost since those football players back uh wide receivers play. Um They’re freshman quarterback phase on Brandon. Is there, is there uh point guard um as soon as they got those football guys back, they have been really good. So I’m interested to see how they match up against one of those charlatans. I agree. Yeah, I mean the four a west is, it’s gonna be a total fight. A lot of really good teams, a lot of really good programs. Um Yeah, it’ll be a really exciting time for, for basketball at west. Specifically in the charlotte area. We’re gonna move on to the 48 girls now uh in the east, the current automatic bids as high school oT projects them currently belong to over hills, D. H. Conley, Cardinal Gibbons, Athens drive, hillside southern elements, willow spring, Clayton, Hoggard, Millbrook, Rolls ville, pine crest, apex, Friendship, panther creek Creek and Purnell Swett. The current last five in our southeast Raleigh broaden Green, Hope green level and night dale. In the current first five out for New Hanover Laney Lumberton, Richmond and Cleveland. The thing that jumps out to me just from that before I even talk about who the top seed is the last five in and first five out. There are some some high notoriety programs on the bubble right now. You look at southeast Raleigh uh one that had been a juggernaut in the late 2000 tens and then into 2020. Uh Green Hope has had some pretty good girls basketball teams. Green level and the school has been pretty strong in recent years and has some talent. Uh and then New Hanover Lane in Lumberton, Richmond Cleveland, it’s varying degrees, all teams that are typically solid um on the outside looking in right now, the current top seed is apex Friendship. Uh they lose India Navarre, they still have our sister Jasmine and they still have more than enough talent to be very good. They currently hold the projected top seed. Millbrook holds the four seed currently led by Alabama commit Rachel Douglas hillside, a really strong team holds the three seed currently and Hoggard holds the two seed currently. So um yeah, I mean this is always an interesting bracket. Um there there’s a good mix I think in the four h girls of established dominant programs and then every year we see a couple of teams kind of work their way up with good coaching and kind of younger talents to challenge those teams. It’s always an interesting dynamic. Um do you have anything to kind of adhere well we talked about the next six and football all the time? But I think in girls basketball this year, it’s really strong from what I’ve seen and hasn’t been much, but from what I’ve seen, they’ve been really good. Millbrook being the four seed um Roseville I think is a really good scene. They have this girl and her name is escaping me, but she is really dynamic. Um Number five. Uh So yeah, and Wakefield might deal. They’re always solid, so heritage as well. So we’re currently looking at all six of them getting in. Yeah. Um which is really, really hard to do. So we’ll see if that stays true. Yeah, that’s a good point. The neck is really strong in girls basketball. Typically moving out west. The current automatic bids as projected currently belong to East Forsyth RJ Reynolds, Lake Norman Hickory Ridge, Northern Guilford, Northwest Guilford, Asheville, Watauga North Mech charlotte catholic independence, Myers Park, South Mech, Marvin Ridge and Porter Ridge. So both ridges currently automatic bids. The last five in Butler, Culbertson, McDowell County, Western Guilford and Page and the first five out, Mount Tabor West Forsyth South caldwell huff and Sun Valley. The top seed is currently Asheville. Uh The current to seed is Lake norman Watauga, Northern Guilford, North Mech and charlotte catholic round out 2 to 6? Um Joel, do you have any uh any thoughts on all this? Yeah, that Lake norman team is pretty incredible. Um We we did not have them on our preseason rankings and they let us know about it. Um The reason why is because they lost two of their top three scores from last year, but I think they have a freshman now. Um And the players going back, we’re all really young. Um So we didn’t really account for that and they are just there a machine, like none of their games are close. Um So they’re currently the number one team in our statewide rankings. Um And I don’t expect that to change, so that’s gonna be interesting if they end up having to uh I mean if they, I mean if they say the two seed they won’t have to go anywhere, but they somehow dropped to three to have them travel to you is not gonna be totally, that’s very fun. Yeah, what jumps out to me is you’ve got chambers, the three time defending state champion I believe now at the 25 seeds. So obviously talent doesn’t stay forever in high school sports but culture does um not forever necessarily, but for a while after the talent it’ll it’ll stick around. Um so there’s some players on that team that that were on that team that beat Apex friendship last year in that state championship game. Um For a 25 seed, they’re currently lined up against Myers Park. Myers Park, a really good talented team. Probably feel okay for them, but but Chambers, I mean that’s a that’s a team I wouldn’t want to see in the first round among the lower teams. Mallard Creek also a program that has been pretty dominant recently. Sitting at the 17 line kind of interesting as well, charlotte catholic has some some really high level talent. I know J mike blake was just out there for us to to cover their game and and kind of get a look at what they’ve got. Um Yeah, I think that’s about all I’ve got for this, but it’s gonna be another interesting bracket. Yeah, definitely. Look at the full projections. Um I think the three A boys bracket is really interesting. Um That might be arguably the strongest overall field in terms of just like just the number of um you know, high level teams that are gonna be facing off. So yeah, take a look at all these projections, they’re pretty fun and we’re gonna keep updating them throughout the end of the regular. We got we got all that discussion just out of one classification. So imagine all the internal discussion you could have if you went and read all four, yeah, four of the classifications and their projection. So yeah, check those out. We’ll be updating them periodically throughout the rest of the basketball season. And yes, yes, download the app for notifications to know right when those come out. I told Joel yesterday it’s crazy how close we are to the end of the regular basket basketball regular season. It’ll be conference tournament time and then playoff time here before we know it, that’ll do it for basketball talk. We’re gonna go back to football. I alluded to in the open, the coaching carousel that is, is rolling right along now. It’s really coming in the triangle, especially these last couple of weeks. I’m gonna do a quick run through on the moves we’ve seen and, and Joel will will break them down more because he’s been at some of these coaching announcement announcements and gotten to talk to these guys. Uh Darrin Donald is going to be the new head football coach at Garner. That is a premier, premier job in Wake County, the head football coach to the Gardener trojans. He comes in from Smithfield Selma where he has led a truly remarkable turnaround with the Spartans these last couple of years. I mean, I know on friday nights at the last couple of years it’s been like, wow, triple S one again and they just kept it rolling and kept it rolling with a really strong year. So Darren Donald in that Garner. Uh Justin Allred makes the jump from, from Jordan where he led the falcons, a young falcons team on a pretty deep playoff run this year. He gets one of those big knack jobs at Wakefield, uh, the Blue Blood football conference of the four a East and certainly Wake County, uh, one of the top conferences in the state, uh, and certainly the top one in the Far East. So he’s gonna have his hands full competing with some of those programs, you look at Roseville and Wake Forest, um but he proved he could do it at Jordan and, and now he’s gonna go a little bit of a step up in terms of for a competition because the falcons were a really impressive young team this year, and Antonio King will will fill all red spot at Jordan. He comes over from South Garner and this is a, an interesting one. Coach King has moved around quite a bit, but you know, Durham is kind of his home base, he is a legend in that community and I think the people at Jordan’s while losing coach already probably feels like a tough break with how, how good they were last year. Coach King is a huge in my opinion, a slam dunk higher for them with with him and his home turf in Durham. What have you gained insight wise from, from getting to talk to some of these guys making these moves. Yeah, so um, Ron Donald at Garner, that that is a very good hire for that program. Um Coach Donald has wanted places that you don’t see many coaches winning at Andy smith and Triple S. Um he has a very fiery personality, um, players really gravitate towards him. Um he’s very player focused coach um which I think is probably what Garner needs right now because they’ve kind of been doing what they’ve been doing for a while, but Um frankly the the types of the players that they were starting to get were a little bit different from the players that they had had historically. Um so I think that having a guy like that that can really kind of just like sit back and pinpoint, like what the strengths are of this current group, I think it’s gonna be really helpful for them. Um very bright guy, very um, hear him talking, he just can’t stop listening to him. Um and I know that uh coach Charles Harris 80 and the Principal Matthew Price, I knew like they were blown away by him as soon as they talked to him. So um I think if, I think if if Gardner is going to get turned around this is probably the guy that is going to do it. Um the Wakefield Jourdan kind of exchange, this is interesting people um we’re curious about like the timing of this all um because we get the announcement that already is at Wakefield and then like a day or two later Jordan’s analysis that Antonio king is now their head coach. Um Wakefield had already picked for a bit, it just took a while to get fully processed through the Wake County system. Um so Jordan knew for a while, so George has started their search for a while before that, so um it’s not, it doesn’t look at, I know it looks weird, but it really wasn’t that weird um already uh people are kind of questioning why he would leave Jordan’s um I do know that he, this is gonna be a much easier drive for him. He does live in Lake County. Um it’s not as easy as one might think, going from uh the northern, northeastern part of Wake County over to Durham every day. Um I know that very well. It is, and You mentioned this conference um this conference was great in 2017 and it has sent, it seemed to the regional final every single season, every single season basically. Right, right, so if you want to get into the best league possibly cannot use, this is probably what you want to get into. Right? I know Jordan’s lot coming back, but um long term, I think he probably sees that Wakefield job and being able to compete with those coaches and those teams is probably something pretty appetizing. And you mentioned Antonio can go back going back to a Durham there um that’s a really good higher. Um I know he’s kind of bounced around a little bit, but I think he’s been really kind of waiting for that one spot where you can go and just kind of like, you know, put his roots back into the ground and really build something and I think he’s got a chance there, they have a lot of really good players coming back and yeah, I’m very interested to see how that Jordan team looks next year. Yeah, I agree. I think, I think they’re gonna be on, you know, shortlists for, for competitors out of the four A East, I think we’ll have them there. Um and like you mentioned, I’m really curious to see um what coach already can do at Wakefield because it’s not, it’s not a lack of talent. A Wakefield, there are a lot of kids at that school and a lot of talented football players. We’ve seen them put putting players in college pretty consistently throughout the last few years. It’s just, it’s just a matter of these entrenched beasts full of talent and full of great coaching that that they have to compete with in a conference every year. Um that really makes that job tough. Um I think, you know, I think coach already is going to be up to that challenge, but I’m interested to see, you know, what the exact results are going to look like as time moves forward. So we we know that that part of Wake County is where all the talent, not all the talent, but most of talents concentrated nowadays. Um Wake Forest uh kind of like the Wakefield Mill brook Heritage Rosell area, that’s where consistently those teams are all really good. Like those are all some of the top teams in Wake County, just for whatever reason, that’s where, you know, these players come from, right. So there are there are kids that Wakefield, I do believe that it’s not like ages ago when they were regularly making these deep playoff runs. Right? Um I know when when coach sink was there before he left for heritage, they were they were really good. And so it’s not even that long ago, I think it’s just about um getting some consistency in there and then um just, you know, building building it back up from, from the ground up. Yeah, I think, I mean just the best way to illustrate the the talent in that area is the fact that Wake Forest Roseville in 2010 was its own school. Heritage opens. Heritage takes little time at all to become good. Wake Forest remains great roles ville opens, they take very little time to become really good. Wake Forest and heritage maintain, you know, very strong levels. So um, it’s just crazy how how quickly that one school became three schools and how good they all are at football. There’s just so much talent um in that particular area and, and I think it’s, you know, we see talent at night still a lot we see talent at Millbrook. That conference is just, it’s out of this world. That area is, is really good at producing football talent. Yeah, and I mean, I, I really like the coach Raglan nightingale pairing. Um that’s not one that I kind of like, you know, predicted, but when it happened I was like, okay, yeah, that makes sense because coach Ragland got a lot of those Millcreek players and I think he’s just getting started at night deal, but I think that, that’s a guy that could, um, probably build something consistent there. Um, so I’m definitely watching out for them. Yeah, I think that’s a, that’s a good place to end it for today. Um, so again, check out high school Ot for the basketball playoff projections. The full football state teams download the high school Ot app to stay up to date with our latest coverage. Um, as basketball rolls on, we’re getting really close to two wrestling playoffs and swimming regionals and states coming up here soon. And then after that, it will be basketball conference tournaments and playoffs. So the time is near for, for some championships to, to be one, we’re getting pretty close to all that I could never get past how swimming happens in the winter. It seems so like odd to me because I have gotten used to it by now, but it certainly doesn’t, this one of those things that just doesn’t compute necessarily thank you all for so much for watching high school ot roundtable Once again for Joel Bryant. I’m Kyle morton and we will see you next time
