College Basketball Transfer Portal: Final Top 150 Player Rankings for 2023 – 247Sports

Published

on

The college basketball transfer portal is closed and that means players who have not graduated are no longer able to enter. To date, more than 1,700 players put their name in the portal; more than 800 players have made decisions on their future, leaving roughly 900 still available.
After some more big names have entered over the last month, it’s time to update and expand the 247Sports Transfer Portal Player Rankings to a Top 150, our final rankings for the 2023 class.
We’ve removed former No. 3 player Taran Armstrong from the rankings, as the Cal Baptist transfer is headed to Australia’s NBL.
Click here for the full rankings
Ratings are in parenthesis: 100-98 denotes a 5-star, 97-90 is a 4-star and 89-80 denotes a 3-star.
Stats: 18.5 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 1.5 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Hunter Dickinson‘s transfer saga was the biggest storyline of the offseason, deciding to leave Michigan and lead the country on a wild goose chase trying to figure out where he’d land.
After weeks of speculation he put an end to it all with a video announcing his commitment to Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks as they continue their hot streak on the recruiting trail.
Dickinson is the most productive player in the portal dealing out his damage to Big Ten opponents year after year.
He has his limitations but there’s no denying the immediate impact he will have as an interior presence at Kansas next season. As my colleague Isaac Trotter writes in an in-depth Dickinson breakdown:
“Dickinson’s ability to toy with elite post-up defenses will come in handy next season at Kansas. … But Dickinson is armed with three years of experience against every single defensive coverage you can possibly imagine, and he’s teaming up with one of college basketball’s brightest X’s and O’s minds in Bill Self. Giving a savant like Self a well-informed big man like Dickinson is just unfair.”
Stats: 6.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 0.5 APG, 1.3 BPG; 3 years of eligibility remaining
Kel’el Ware is the supreme talent in the transfer portal but didn’t live up to it at Oregon this past season.
He decided to find a fresh start, finding a new home at Indiana, where Mike Woodson will have the chance to tap into Ware’s immense upside.
Ware is a very polarizing prospect and understandably so. Despite standing seven-feet tall with tremendous fluidity, able to switch on the perimeter, protect the rim and score from all three levels on offense, his motor and competitiveness have long been in question.
He has major boom or bust potential but if the light comes on for him, he will be a star in Bloomington and beyond.
Stats: 17.9 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 2.1 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Grant Nelson is currently undergoing the NBA Draft process and while that is the expected pathway he takes, he is leaving his options open via the portal. Nelson is a 6-foot-11 big man is as skilled as they come in college basketball at his size.
He can stretch the floor, put the ball on the deck and create with his outstanding face-up game. At the off-chance Nelson plays another year of college basketball, he will be one of the most impactful players next season.
Stats: 14.5 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 1.6 APG, 2.7 BPG; 1 year of eligibility remaining
Jesse Edwards is one of the better players in the portal thanks to his ability to impact the game inside on both ends of the court and he also has upside to tap into that could attract NBA organizations. He rebounds, blocks shots and scores over either shoulder due to his outstanding hands and touch.
Edwards is the star of West Virginia’s premier transfer portal class.
Stats: 11.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.1 APG
JJ Starling entered the season as a projected first-round pick, exiting high school as a five-star prospect. Reasons for Starling being rated so high were due to his blend of size, athleticism and his ability to score the ball (particularly as a shooter) with upside as a playmaker.
However, from the moment of his first game with the Fighting Irish, it was clear that Starling’s jumper was not the same as it was just a few short months prior.
Overall, it was a rocky season for Starling and the regression in his jumpshot (29-percent from three) has resulted in his floor as an impact scorer falling a bit but he has tremendous upside and if he finds his rhythm and mechanics again, he could easily make the jump up to No. 1 when we look back in a year.
Stats: 8.3 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.4 APG; 3 years of eligibility remaining
Julian Phillips was one of the late additions to the transfer portal just hours before it closed. He’s a 6-foot-8 versatile forward that exited high school as a McDonald’s All-American and five-star prospect but his freshman season didn’t go as well as many hoped.
Currently, Phillips is going through the NBA Draft process and his measurements have been outstanding with a 43-inch vertical, which ranked atop those at the Combine this year.
At his best, Phillips is a versatile forward who can push the break, slash in the half-court, defend multiple positions, rebound and can make a shot on the perimeter, but he might be suiting up for a professional outfit this summer rather than landing at another school (these are the schools that make the most sense for Phillips, per Trotter)
Stats: 15.0 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 2.0 APG
The best shooter in the portal is Baylor transfer LJ Cryer. For three years, Cryer has played in Waco. He was a reserve on the 2020-21 national championship team but made a big winning impact the last two seasons, contributing to a total of 50 wins.
As he told 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins, Cryer wants to prove himself more than just being a shooter and play the point at his next stop.
While he is better-suited as a scorer and floor-spacer, Cryer is undoubtedly going to be a valuable addition with his proven experience and shot-making at the highest level of college basketball.
Stats: 20.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.6 APG
If the name rings a bell, it should: Jameer Nelson Jr. is the son of former NBA player Jameer Nelson and like his father, junior has a whole lot of game. A recent TCU commit, Nelson Jr. will be taking that game to Fort Worth.
He may lack height but he is strong and highly athletic with an explosive first step and burst of speed. He’s very dynamic with the ball in his hands, making for a major weapon out of ball-screens and in isolations where he can get downhill and finish at the rim or create with others.
If Nelson Jr. had better shooters around him this season, with his playmaking ability, his assist numbers would have been much higher and with him expected to make a leap next year to a high major program, I’d anticipate us seeing that happen.
Nelson Jr. is very talented and is going to make a major impact next season wherever he lands. If he elevates his jumper back up to the 36-percent we saw the season prior, it won’t be a surprise to see us start talking about him as a NBA Draft prospect.
Stats: 21.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.0 APG; 1 year of eligibility remaining
Max Abmas was the darling of the 2021 NCAA Tournament paving the way for 15-seed Oral Roberts to the Sweet Sixteen via upsets of Ohio State and Florida. Now he heads to Austin as the new face of a program that’s undergone a bit of an exodus.
He’s a speedy and aggressive guard with tons of range on his jumper. He’s a threat from anywhere on the floor anytime the ball is in his hands and it draws immense attention from the defense.
Abmas gets downhill, stretches the floor and gets those around him open looks.
One concern with Abmas lies in his size, standing sub six-foot and having averaged just 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and four-assists, shooting a total of 5-28 from the field, 3-18 from three in his two games against high-major teams this season (Duke and Houston).
Stats: 12.1 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 4.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Ryan Nembhard was one of the best point guards in the Big East on a team that went to the Elite Eight this year and still has two years to play.
He has a high IQ, he’s tough and while he is at his best setting the table for others, he has continued to improve his scoring since entering college.
When he hit the portal, all eyes shifted to Tommy Lloyd and the Arizona Wildcats to land this prized transfer but maybe we were too quick to write off the Gonzaga Bulldogs. In either system, Nembhard will have a major impact and is sure to prove himself as one of the best transfers to hit this offseason.
Stats: 15.9 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 3.9 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Javian McCollum is one of the risers since the latest update following some deeper dives into his film from the season. He lacks size and possesses a slight frame but you won’t find many guards more dynamic than this rising junior.
He’s lethal with and without the ball, able to make any shot on the court and is a serious weapon operating out of ball screens. The one thing that particularly jumped out in the latest film study of McCollum was how talented of a passer he is and something that can continue to shine with a stronger supporting cast around him.
Stats: 13.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.2 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Brandon Murray was one of the top players in the portal last off-season but headed to Georgetown under Patrick Ewing where he wasn’t able to show his full capabilities.
As a freshman at LSU, Murray showed how he can impact winning in a variety of ways through his ability to score, rebound, defend and facilitate.
Murray is already off the board to go play for Chris Beard at Ole Miss and should make for a terrific pairing, allowing him to illustrate why he was so highly thought of this time last year.
Only thing is, we may have to wait a year before we see what the two can do together as this is Murray’s second transfer and getting a waiver this time around will be no easy task.
Stats: 20.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.8 APG; 1 year of eligibility remaining
You probably haven’t heard of Dalton Knecht but I’d recommend typing his name in on YouTube and checking out his film. He’s a 6-foot-6 versatile forward with a deep skills package.
He can create and make shots both off the catch and dribble and rebounds well for the position. He’s already on NBA radar and will be a very valuable asset to Tennessee this season. I’m interested to see how Rick Barnes and the Volunteers use him.
Stats: 23.4 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.3 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining

Jordan Dingle is leader in the portal in the points category averaging more than 23-points per game this past season. Dingle is a strong-bodied guard and while he isn’t the best athlete he is skilled and high level shooter from deep.
Dingle is going to be a weapon for Rick Pitino as he rebuilds St. John’s and gets them back to the NCAA Tournament in his first year as head coach.
Stats: 2.6 PPG, 1.8 RPG, 0.3 APG; 3 years of eligibility remaining
Don’t let the low numbers fool you — Ernest Udeh is going to be a valuable pickup for someone this offseason. Udeh was another last-second addition to the portal and a former McDonald’s All-American.
Udeh’s a big post prospect with a strong and powerful frame and a high motor. He can impact the game at a high level on the glass, blocking shots, running the floor, setting screens and finishing around the rim.
With time, he can prove why he was and is still coveted being pursued by Duke, Kansas State, TCU and others. Udeh recently visited Durham (VIP)
Stats: 16.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Caleb Love is the biggest name in the portal whose saga took another turn May 17 when 247Sports reported Love wouldn’t be suiting up for Michigan this season, after all. Love’s a former five-star recruit and the darling of the magical North Carolina March run in 2022.
Despite the good counting numbers, 2022-23 was a rocky season for Love and the Tar Heels. His shot selection and percentages regressed as the season went on which is the primary reason he finds himself slotted here in these rankings.
Love is still highly talented and can really score the basketball when his shot is falling and it was clear he needed a fresh start at a new home. Love will need to display better shot selection and decision-making to get back onto NBA Draft boards this time next year.
Stats: 12.7 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 5.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Adrian ‘Ace’ Baldwin is one of the top point guards in the transfer portal. He’s tough, confident and aggressive with the bal, able to get downhill, he makes plays for others and also is able to put the ball in the hole.
He was a perfect pairing with Mike Rhoades at VCU.
Stats: 11.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.6 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Arthur Kaluma entered the portal in the final hours before its closure but like many others he is undergoing the 2023 NBA Draft process. He’s a versatile forward who can score, rebound and defend but hasn’t developed his long-range jumper like many hoped.
Kaluma doesn’t plan to make a college decision until after this week’s NBA Combine but there will be a stout line of schools trying to land him. 247Sports’ Isaac Trotter last week made the pitch for Kaluma as the best available player in the portal
Stats: 17.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Khalif Battle is arguably the best bucket-getter in the transfer portal right now. He averaged 17.9 points a game and inflicts his damage at all three levels but particularly the three-point line where he drilled 35-percent of his 8.1 attempts a game this season.
Despite coming off the bench for Temple most of the year, Battle was still able to lead the team in scoring.  On 13 occasions, Battle scored more than 20 points this season in 27 games played. Arkansas head coach Eric Musselman will see if he can tap into his scoring to create another JD Notae-type player.
Stats: 19.5 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.3 APG; 3 years of eligibility remaining
Graham Ike was set to have a monster season at Wyoming but missed the year due to injury. He’s got great size, he’s long and strong, inflicting bruises and damage inside the paint both on the glass and as a low-block scorer.
The 6-foot-9, 255-pounder is a throwback big man and that’s music to Mark Few’s ears.
PLAYERS NOS. 21-150
21. KADIN SHEDRICK, C: COMMITTED TO TEXAS, FROM VIRGINIA (94)
Stats: 6.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 0.6 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
The underwhelming numbers don’t paint a clear picture of Kadin Shedrick. When you dig deeper into his film, it’s clear how he impacts the win column.
The 6-foot-11 Shedrick has size and length, he’s mobile and smart, using his tools to his advantage to impact the game at a high level on the defensive end of the floor.
He’s aware of who he is as a player, buying into his role on defense and cleaning up around the rim on offense.
22. TRAMON MARK, SF: COMMITTED TO ARKANSAS, FROM HOUSTON (94)
Stats: 10.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Tramon Mark has been a valuable piece to Houston’s run over the last three years and now he is off to find a bigger role at Arkansas, which has fashioned itself as the portal king the last few cycles.
Mark is a talented and versatile wing who has shown ability to play some on the ball coming out of high school. Mark impacts the game in just about every way from defense to rebounding, slashing and creating but his biggest weakness lies in his long-ball. If Mark takes his jumper to the next level, he will find himself cracking future draft boards.
23. AARON ESTRADA, SG: COMMITTED TO ALABAMA, FROM HOFSTRA (94)
Stats: 20.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 4.3 APG; 1 year of eligibility remaining
Aaron Estrada is back-to-back CAA Conference Player of the Year coming out of Hofstra. The southpaw guard is a high-volume scorer with the ability to also create for others.
He can make shots off the catch and bounce and he operates out of ball-screens to score and create off the dribble.
His aggressive style and ability to put points on the board make for a great fit with Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide.
24. HARRISON INGRAM, PF: COMMITTED TO NORTH CAROLINA, FROM STANFORD (94)
Stats: 10.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 3.7 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Harrison Ingram is one of the several of former McDonald’s All Americans to have hit the portal this season.
He’s a small ball four man who is at his best when operating as a glue guy with his ability to rebound, push the break and pass the basketball.
He’s not the best scorer nor has he developed his jumper but he can be a solid piece with his ability to impact the game in various ways for the Tar Heels next season.
25. MATTHEW CLEVELAND, SF: COMMITTED TO MIAMI, FROM FLORIDA STATE (94)
Stats: 13.8 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.8 APG; 2 years of eligibility remaining
Matthew Cleveland is another former five-star prospect looking to find a fresh start this season. He’s an athletic and skilled wing who is at his best making shots from mid-range and scoring in transition.
He’s proven to be an impactful rebounder on the wing as well and finding a spot where he can create off pindowns and dribble hand-offs to get him into his spots in the half-court can make for a nice offensive boost for Miami next season.
26. Micah Hondlogten, C: Committed to Florida, From Marshall (94)
Stats: 7.6 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.2 APG, 2.3 BPG
