Arizona State big man Warren Washington entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reports, indicating that the rising fifth-year senior will look to leave the Sun Devils’ basketball program. The 7-foot, 225-pounder averaged 9.2 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.8 blocks last season as a starter for ASU, which advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Washington will be looking for his fourth college basketball program. Originally a 3-star recruit in the 2018 class out of San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills, Washington committed to Oregon State and played in 27 games for the Beavers during the 2018-19 season as a reserve. From there, Washington transferred to Nevada — he sat out the 2019-20 season due to NCAA rules, then played two more seasons for the Wolf Pack.
After a productive two-year run on the court for Nevada during which Washington averaged double-figure scoring in both seasons, he transferred again last offseason to Arizona State. The Sun Devils went 23-13, beat Nevada in the NCAA Tournament First Four and then lost to TCU in the first round.Washington went for nine points, five rebounds and four assists against Nevada then posted 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four blocks against the Horned Frogs.
After that narrow loss, Washington discussed the sting of exiting March Madness as he faced the decision of where to spend his final season of eligibility — if he were to use it at all.
“I still haven’t honestly processed it yet, so kind of going through it right now,” Washington said. “It’s tough, man. I love these guys, went to war with them every game, and I felt like we all played for each other. And at the end of the day, everybody wanted to win on this team, and that’s what I love, man. Yeah, it’s rough, obviously, and that’s just the way it is. We’re all competitors. It’s going to be tough right now, but it’s going to pass, and we’re going to get through it.”
In the first year of the portal windows, the college basketball transfer portal began March 13 and runs until May 11.
Numerous graduate transfers already entered the transfer portal prior to the March 13 opening, but that date kicked off the 60-day window for the rest of the prospective transfers to hop in the portal to examine their options. The one-time transfer rule is still intact, per usual. If a player has not transferred yet, they are immediately eligible.
