The transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh away. Miami and Auburn are the latest notable schools to be reminded of this fact. On Sunday, Matthew Cleveland, a five-star recruit from the Class of 2021 who averaged a team-high 13.8 points at Florida State last season, committed to Miami, where he figures to start for the reigning ACC regular-season co-champions. Then, on Monday, Allen Flanigan, who averaged 10.1 points and 5.0 rebounds at Auburn last season, officially entered the transfer portal. The speculation is that Flanigan, who just graduated from Auburn, will now transfer to Ole Miss, where his father, Wes, recently joined Chris Beard’s staff.
These developments have Miami up to No. 12, and Auburn down to No. 26, in Version 12.0 of the 2023-24 CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 preseason college basketball rankings, where Kansas remains No. 1 thanks to last week’s addition of former Michigan All-American Hunter Dickinson.
A possible KU starting lineup now looks like this:
That’s a starting lineup with size, shooting and experience, one so strong that former top-35 prospects Arterio Morris and Ernest Udeh will likely begin games on the bench. Combine that with the fact that Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer Bill Self — a man who has made 24 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and earned No. 1 seeds in 10 of the past 16 NCAA Tournaments — will be the person developing the roster and coaching the team, and I personally think the Jayhawks should now be considered the favorites to win the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
