For three weeks the 2023 NCAA Tournament was unbridled chaos, and now a national champion will be cutting down the nets Monday night as No. 4 seed UConn and No. 5 seed San Diego State square off at NRG Stadium in Houston in the final college basketball game of the season. The Huskies are aiming for their fifth national title of the last 25 years while the Aztecs are seeking to breakthrough for the first national championship in program history.
It’s a game pitting teams from opposite ends of the country who have opposite styles of play. Defense is the calling card of the Aztecs, who thrive on dragging opponents into slow-paced brawls with an old roster that is strong, physical and deep. UConn plays good defense, too, but the Huskies have raced past NCAA Tournament opponents by putting their deep offensive arsenal on display.
The battle of post players should be particularly intriguing as UConn bruiser Adama Sanogo and 7-foot-2 freshman phenom Donovan Clingan go up against San Diego State shot-blocking menace Nathan Mensah and the Aztecs’ host of imposing athletes. On the perimeter, SDSU wing Matt Bradley will try and build off a 21-point performance in Saturday’s Final Four victory. He will be tasked with out-dueling UConn 3-point marksman Jordan Hawkins.
Whoever emerges will bet cutting down the nets at the end of the night and going down in history as the last team standing from what’s been a wild 2023 NCAA Tournament.
