Ready for some great news? Timberwolves beat reporter, Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News has shared his latest NBA Rumors about the team, and all point to exciting updates about the Timberwolves’ options for additional help at the point guard position.
When it comes to the current Minnesota Timberwolves roster, the weakest depth for the team runs at the point guard position. Behind starting veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr. the Timberwolves have penciled in veteran combination guard Shake Milton, who is formerly from the Philadelphia 76ers, and last year’s backup point guard, Jordan McLaughlin, who regressed badly in the 2022-23 NBA season.
With that in mind, the Timberwolves front office had scheduled a workout with veteran point guard Elfrid Payton. Unfortunately, Payton left the Timberwolves with no immediate contract offer.
The Timberwolves have multiple roster spots open, and with the team starting training camp early this year, pressure is mounting for the roster to be filled, quickly.
Per Timberwolves beat reporter Darren Wolfson (he’s definitely worth a follow), the Timberwolves have expanded their point search to include point guard Cameron Payne as well as point guard Kennedy Chandler.

While both Payton and Payne are veterans, Chandler is entering only his second NBA season. While the Timberwolves have completed workouts with all three candidates, no contract offers have been extended.
Elfrid Payton is a 6-foot-4 185-pound veteran PG who spent last season retaining his NBA skills with the G-League Fort Worth Mad Ants. He last competed in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns in the 2021-22 NBA season.
Kennedy Chandler is 20 years old and is a 6-foot-0 171-pound point guard who played a reserve point guard role for the Memphis Grizzlies. In 7.8 minutes, he put up 2.2 points and dished out 1.6 assists per game.
Chandler Payne is the real prize of the Timberwolves star search.  The 6-foot-1 183-pound NBA veteran point guard of eight NBA seasons last played for the Phoenix Suns last season. He appeared in 486 games and had 15 starts in the 2022-23 NBA season. Averaging just over 20 minutes per game, he put up 10.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game.
