NBA Rumors: What does the Christian Wood signing mean for Damian Lillard and the Miami Heat?
Since the craziness of the first few weeks of NBA Free Agency came to a standstill, Christian Wood was one of the bigger names still out on the open market playing the waiting game. As the first few waves of free agency came and went, it quickly became clear that Wood was one of the players that was going to wait for the right situation to arise. Even if that meant waiting a couple of months before finding a new home.
And that’s exactly what transpired before it was announced that Wood had come to an agreement with the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year deal. Less than a month before the start of NBA Training Camps, Wood officially has his new team.
But based on the reports that were circling around Wood before signing with the Lakers, there’s a case to be made that his deal with Los Angeles could be an indicator of another big move. In the weeks before signing with the Lakers, it was reported that Wood was possibly waiting for the Damian Lillard trade to be completed before picking his next team.
You can’t help but wonder if Wood agreeing to a deal with the Lakers tells us something more about Lillard and the possibility of a deal coming together before training camp.
It’s not outrageous to say that Wood signing with the Lakers could be an indication that Lillard probably isn’t getting traded before the start of the season. It’s no guarantee that the Wood signing tells us anything about Lillard but perhaps there was some still hesitation from his camp to wait any longer.
And you can’t really blame Wood if that ended up being the case. Additionally, the Lakers are probably the best overall fit for Wood at this point.
Even if the Miami Heat would’ve landed Lillard, Wood is unlikely to be a starter for the team. With Los Angeles, there’s at least an outside chance that he ends up being the projected starter heading into the start of training camp.
Wood and the Lakers make sense. The bigger question is whether this means a Lillard trade isn’t happening before the start of the season.
If that is the case, who knows when the Lillard saga is going to come to an end? This could very well drag to the NBA Trade Deadline.
