SALT LAKE CITY — Memphis Grizzlies rookie second-round pick Jaylen Wells’ dominant all-around effort was capped by a game-winning floating one-handed jumper at the buzzer to lead the Grizzlies to an exciting 87-85 comeback victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in a Salt Lake City Summer League clash Tuesday evening at Delta Center in Utah.
The 76ers (1-1) opened the game in a dominant fashion that belied how competitive the contest would eventually become, as Philadelphia had a 31-17 lead over the Grizzlies (1-1) after one quarter. However, Memphis turned the tables in the second, erasing the entirety of its deficit to send the game into halftime knotted at 49-49. The Grizzlies would then turn their defense up several notches in the second half, limiting the Sixers to 36 points in the final two quarters and sealing the hard-fought victory with Wells’ exciting buzzer-beating bucket off an Isaiah Miller miss.
Wells led the 76ers with 27 points, adding six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Fellow rookie second-round pick Cam Spencer contributed 18 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and one steal. DeJon Jarreau totaled 12 points, eight boards, four assists, two steals and one block. Miller and Timmy Allen generated matching eight-point efforts, with Miller adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Jeff Dowtin paced the 76ers with 18 points, supplementing them with six assists, two rebounds and one steal. Keve Aluma supplied 15 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block. Justin Edwards registered 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks. Rookie first-round pick Jared McCain totaled 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal.
