The Seton Hall Pirates paced UConn in the first half and exploded in the paint in the second, defeating the No. 5 Huskies 75-60. This marked the reigning champs’ worst loss since it fell 75-60 at USF in January 2020, and its first 15+ point defeat to an unranked team since February 2011 (89-72 loss at St. John’s).
Kadary Richmond’s 23 points were a season-high, and his eight steals were a career-high for the senior guard, who ignited Seton Hall’s onslaught on both ends of the court. He also dished out five assists and racked up six boards.

Team-wide, the Pirates shot 52% from the field and racked up 11 steals and six blocks, though only making three three-point shots. They led UConn by as much as 17 points in the second half.

The Pirates controlled the post, out-scoring UConn 46-34 in the paint. UConn’s glaring problem in guarding the key is depth, chiefly due to the injury of 7’2 center Donovan Clingan. The big man scored 14 points in just as many minutes of play, and recorded seven rebounds before hobbling off the court due to a nagging lower-body injury.

The Huskies could’ve looked to perimeter shooting to compensate for these issues, but only shot 19% from three… Only managing one triple in the second half alone. UConn’s usual top scorers Cam Spencer and Alex Karaban were held to single-digit-scoring and shot under 30% from the field.
For a UConn team that already has marquee wins over ranked Gonzaga, Texas and UNC on its 2023 resumé, the Huskies drop to 10-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Big East. UConn looks to bounce back against St. John’s on Saturday.
This was Seton Hall’s first win over a top 5 team since November 2021, when it topped then-No. 4 Michigan, 67-65. The Pirates open Big East play 1-0, and post an 8-4 record on the season. The Pirates travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier on Saturday.
