College basketball transfer portal: First impression of each ACC team's offseason – 247Sports
Not every team has the same plan in the NCAA transfer portal. That’s extremely evident in the ACC. Duke, North Carolina and Miami – three of the conference’s projected best teams next season – are focused on retaining their own top talent and adding complementary pieces in the transfer portal. NC State? Complete opposite. With Terquavion Smith and Jarkel Joiner departing, NC State is a big-game hunter in the portal.
There are critical stay-or-go, 2023 NBA Draft decisions that still have to be made for some of the ACC’s best players, but rosters throughout the league are starting to come into shape after a flurry of commitments.
Once again, the transfer portal will have its fingerprints all over the league. For better or for worse.

Here’s a look at every ACC team’s moves so far this offseason and what to make of each offseason:
Editor’s note: In case you missed it, you can check out the tracker of every stay-or-go decision in the Big Ten and the SEC.
Departed: Demarr Langford (7.0 PPG, transfer portal), T.J. Bickerstaff (5.2 PPG, transfer portal), Makai Ashton-Langford (12.4 PPG), CJ Penha (6.3 PPG),
In limbo: N/A
Returning: Quinten Post (15.1 PPG), Jaeden Zackery (10.7 PPG), Devin McGlockton (6.1 PPG), DJ Hand (2.5 PPG), Chas Kelley (2.9 PPG), Mason Madsen (5.8 PPG)
Newcomers: Claudell Harris Jr. (17.4 PPG at Charleston Southern), Fred Payne (three-star), Jayden Hastings (three-star), Elijah Strong
The skinny: Harris is a strong addition for Boston College’s backcourt, but Earl Grant managing to convince Quinten Post to stick around for another year is the biggest news of the Eagles’ offseason. Post was playing like one of the ACC’s top big men when he finally got healthy.
Departed: Nelly Cummings (11.1 PPG), Nate Santos (1.6 PPG, transfer portal), John Hugley IV (8.0 PPG, transferred to Oklahoma), Jamarius Burton (15.2 PPG), Greg Elliott (10.4 PPG), Nike Sibande (8.4 PPG)
In limbo: Blake Hinson (15.3 PPG, NBA Draft entree),
Returning: Jorge Diaz Graham (2.9 PPG), Guillermo Diaz Graham (3.5 PPG), Fede Federiko (6.6 PPG)
Newcomers: Jaland Lowe (four-star), Carlton Carrington (four-star), Marlon Barnes Jr. (three-star), Ishmael Leggett (16.4 PPG at Rhode Island), Zack Austin (14.1 PPG at High Point)
The skinny: Keeping the Diaz Graham twins out of the transfer portal is a big-time win for Jeff Capel and Co. The versatile forwards have a chance to be major difference-makers as soon as next season. Next up is getting Hinson back. Hinson and Leggett would have no issues shouldering the offensive load next season, and Austin is another intriguing addition. There’s still more work to be done in the portal after a bunch of seniors exhausted their eligibility, but the bones of a NCAA Tournament roster is in place for Capel.
Departed: Tyree Appleby (18.8 PPG), Daivien Williamson (8.7 PPG), Davion Bradford (2.5 PPG, transfer portal), Robert McCray (transfer portal), Lucas Taylor (2.2 PPG, transfer portal)
In limbo: Bobi Klintman (5.3 PPG, NBA Draft entree)
Returning: Cameron Hildreth (12.4 PPG), Damari Monsanto (13.3 PPG), Andrew Carr (10.7 PPG), Matthew Marsh (6.1 PPG), Jao Ituka (3.0 PPG), Zach Keller (2.3 PPG)
Newcomers: Aaron Clark (four-star), Parker Friedrichsen (four-star), Marqus Mitrovic Marion, Kevin ‘Boopie’ Miller (18.5 PPG at Central Michigan), Hunter Sallis (4.5 PPG at Gonzaga)
The skinny: Wake Forest might have a superstar on its hands in Klintman. The problem is that he’s getting real interest from NBA decision-makers already. Getting a second season out of Klintman would be a massive win for Steve Forbes. Until then, Wake Forest can be a little selective in the transfer portal. Miller should step into the role vacated by Appleby and Williamson, but Hildreth and Monsanto are walking, talking buckets.
Departed: Deivon Smith (8.0 PPG), Tristan Maxwell (3.3 PPG), Jordan Meka (0.4 PPG), Cyrill Martynov (0.7 PPG), Jermontae Hill (0.4 PPG), Rodney Howard (4.5 PPG), Freds Pauls Bagatskis (0.9 PPG), Ja’von Franklin (9.7 PPG)
In limbo: Miles Kelly (14.4 PPG, NBA Draft entree)
Returning: Kyle Sturdivant (8.6 PPG), Dallan Coleman (9.5 PPG), Jalon Moore (7.6 PPG), Lance Terry (10.1 PPG)
Newcomers: Kowacie Reeves (8.5 PPG at Florida), Ebenezer Dowuona (1.7 PPG at NC State), Amaree Abram (8.0 PPG at Georgia Tech)
The skinny: Landing a talent like Reeves could be a strong sign for the new Georgia Tech rebuild. The Florida transfer wing could be an All-ACC talent if it all comes together. Rotation pieces like Sturdivant, Coleman, Moore and Terry should keep the floor reasonably high, but Georgia Tech is hunting for more rotation players in the portal.
Departed: Kadin Shedrick (6.2 PPG, transfer portal), Francisco Caffaro (2.0 PPG, transfer portal), Isaac Traudt (transferred to Creighton), Jayden Gardner (12.0 PPG), Kihei Clark (10.7 PPG), Ben Vander Plas (7.4 PPG)
In limbo: Armaan Franklin (12.4 PPG, NBA Draft entree), Reece Beekman (9.5 PPG)
Returning: Isaac McKneely (6.7 PPG), Ryan Dunn (2.6 PPG), Taine Murray (1.4 PPG), Leon Bond III
Newcomers: Elijah Gertrude (four-star), Blake Buchanan (four-star), Andrew Rohde (17.1 PPG at St. Thomas), Jordan Minor (17.4 PPG at Merrimack), Dante Harris (11.9 PPG at Georgetown in 2021-22), Jacob Groves (6.8 PPG at Oklahoma)
The skinny: All three of Virginia’s big men hitting the transfer portal is a little surprising. But landing Minor certainly makes up for it. The Merrimack transfer is a beast. Rohde and Harris upgrade the shot-making and playmaking that Virginia loses. UVA is a championship-level team if Beekman and Franklin return to team up with McKneely, Dunn and the strong transfer portal haul.
Departed: Grant Basile (16.4 PPG), Justyn Mutts (13.3 PPG), Darius Maddox (8.5 PPG, transferred to George Mason), Darren Buchanan Jr. (transfer portal)
In limbo: N/A
Returning: Sean Pedulla (15.0 PPG), Hunter Cattoor (10.8 PPG), Rodney Rice (7.4 PPG), MJ Collins (4.1 PPG), John Camden (1.3 PPG), Mylyjael Poteat (3.4 PPG), Lynn Kidd (5.0 PPG)
Newcomers: Tyler Nickel (2.1 PPG at North Carolina), Jaydon Young (three-star), Brandon Rechsteiner (three-star), Mekhi Long (10.7 PPG at Old Dominion), Robbie Beran (7.5 PPG at Northwestern)
The skinny: Virginia Tech’s backcourt looks to be a major strength with Pedulla, Cattoor and Rice back in the fold. Pedulla could be the best point guard in the ACC, and Cattoor is one of the top snipers around. Rice will be a popular breakout candidate. But the frontcourt is a major question after Basile opted not to use his final year of eligibility. North Carolina transfer Tyler Nickel made a wise choice to pick Virginia Tech because of the fit and opportunity. He’ll have every shot to get tons of buckets for Mike Young.
Departed: Joe Girard III (16.4 PPG, transfer portal), Jesse Edwards (14.5 PPG, transferred to West Virginia), John Bol Ajak (1.1 PPG, transfer portal), Symir Torrence (2.4 PPG, transfer portal)
In limbo: Judah Mintz (16.3 PPG, NBA Draft entree)
Returning: Benny Williams (7.2 PPG), Chris Bell (6.6 PPG), Maliq Brown (5.7 PPG), Justin Taylor (4.2 PPG), Mounir Hima (1.0 PPG)
Newcomers: JJ Starling (11.2 PPG at Notre Dame), Chance Westry (2.5 PPG at Auburn), William Patterson
The skinny: Syracuse flexed its muscles by landing Westry and Starling out of the transfer portal, but new Orange coach Adrian Autry will have to fight the narrative that Syracuse is behind in the NIL game after Edwards’ comments. All eyes are on the status of Mintz. If the bucket-getting lead guard chooses to run it back for a second season, Syracuse will have real staying power in the ACC race.
Departed: El Ellis (17.7 PPG, transferred to Arkansas), Jae’Lyn Withers (8.9 PPG), Ashton Myles-Devore (transfer portal), Devin Ree (0.9 PPG, transfer portal), Kamari Lands (5.9 PPG, transferred to Arizona State), Fabio Basili (1.6 PPG, transfer portal), Roosevelt Wheeler (1.2 PPG, transferred to VCU)
In limbo: N/A
Returning: Mike James (10.1 PPG), JJ Traynor (6.9 PPG), Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (6.7 PPG), Emmanuel Okorafor (4.4 PPG), Hercy Miller (1.8 PPG), Zan Payne (0.2 PPG)
Newcomers: Skyy Clark (7.0 PPG at Illinois), Trentyn Flowers (five-star), Dennis Evans (five-star), Kaleb Glenn (four-star), Curtis Williams Jr. (four-star), Koron Davis
The skinny: It’s a mass exodus out of Louisville, but that might not be the worst thing. Kenny Payne gave Ellis a bunch of shots and a huge role, but he still opted to enter the transfer portal after a dreadful, four-win season. Louisville is shaping up to be one of the youngest teams in the country next season, but the five-star talent is undeniable. The No. 4-ranked recruiting class is dazzling, and Clark – a former five-star, Kentucky commit – is a high-risk, high-reward addition. But Payne could use a few more veteran pieces out of the transfer portal to buff up the roster and raise the floor.
Departed: Hunter Tyson (15.3 PPG), Brevin Galloway (11.2 PPG), Chauncey Wiggins (2.4 PPG, transferred to Tulsa), Ben Middlebrooks (3.1 PPG, transferred to NC State),
In limbo: PJ Hall (15.3 PPG, NBA Draft entree)
Returning: Chase Hunter (13.8 PPG), Alex Hemenway (6.9 PPG), Ian Schieffelin (5.5 PPG), RJ Godfrey (3.2 PPG), Joshua Beadle (2.3 PPG), Dillon Hunter (1.4 PPG), Chauncey Gibson
Newcomers: Jake Heidbreder (15.1 PPG at Air Force), Jack Clark (9.0 PPG at NC State), Asa Thomas (three-star)
The skinny: Clemson targeting Clark and Heidbreder signals Brad Brownell’s commitment to compiling an army of shooters around Hall. Of course, Clemson’s star big man still has to officially return, but Clemson has a strong supporting cast for its All-ACC big man, especially after Chase Hunter chose to return. Getting Hemenway back for another year is certainly a boost, too.
Departed: Terquavion Smith (17.9 PPG, NBA Draft entree), Jarkel Joiner (17.0 PPG), Jack Clark (9.0 PPG, transferred to Clemson), Greg Gantt (2.0 PPG, transferred to UNC-Ashville), Ebenezer Dowuona (1.7 PPG, transferred to Georgia Tech), Dusan Mahorcic (8.7 PPG, transfer portal)
In limbo: DJ Burns Jr. (12.5 PPG)
Returning: Casey Morsell (11.8 PPG), LJ Thomas (2.0 PPG), Breon Pass (1.5 PPG), Isaiah Miranda (redshirt),
Newcomers: Trey Parker (four-star), Dennis Parker Jr. (four-star), MJ Rice (2.2 PPG at Kansas), Ben Middlebrooks (3.1 PPG at Clemson), DJ Horne (12.5 PPG at Arizona State), Jayden Taylor (12.9 PPG at Butler)
The skinny: NC State’s new backcourt of Horne and Taylor should mesh together just fine, and if Rice can get fully healthy, he’ll cement his place as the top NBA Draft prospect on the roster quickly. NC State still needs a stay-or-go decision from Burns who was absolutely dominant down the stretch last season. NC State would have one of the best frontcourts in the ACC if he opts to return.
Departed: Isaiah Wong (16.2 PPG, NBA Draft entree), Jordan Miller (15.3 PPG), Harlond Beverly (3.5 PPG, transferred to Wichita State), Anthony Walker (2.8 PPG, transfer portal), Danilo Jovanovich (0.0 PPG, transfer portal), Favour Aire (0.6 PPG, transfer portal)
In limbo: N/A
Returning: Nijel Pack (13.6 PPG), Norchad Omier (13.1 PPG), Wooga Poplar (8.4 PPG), Bensley Joseph (5.3 PPG), AJ Casey (0.9 PPG), Christian Watson (1.5 PPG), Jakai Robinson (0.6 PPG)
Newcomers: Michael Nwoko (three-star), Kyshawn George
The skinny: Miami’s glitzy, NIL deals made The U a destination for heralded transfers in the 2022 cycle. But Miami has been very quiet in the portal so far. Jim Larrañaga will have no issues if Pack, Omier and Poplar are the best three players on the team next year. But upgrading the depth will be a big thing to watch in the next month. It’s almost too quiet in Miami right now. Don’t be surprised if Larrañaga has something significant cooking.
Departed: Nate Laszewski (13.7 PPG), Cormac Ryan (12.3 PPG, transferred to North Carolina), Dane Goodwin (11.3 PPG), JJ Starling (11.2 PPG, transferred to Syracuse), Marcus Hammond (9.9 PPG), Trey Wertz (8.4 PPG), Ven-Allen Lubin (6.2 PPG, transfer portal), Dom Campbell (0.7 PPG, transferred to Howard), Robby Carmody (0.2 PPG, transfer portal)
In limbo:
Returning: Matt Zona (1.7 PPG), Tony Sanders Jr., J.R. Konieczny
Newcomers: Julian Roper (Northwestern,) Braeden Shrewsberry (three-star), Markus Burton (three-star)
The skinny: New Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry has to build a roster from scratch. Roper is a very intriguing addition who flashed real two-way upside during his time at Northwestern. No one would be surprised if he turns into Shrewsberry’s next great guard. But Notre Dame has a ton of work to do.
Departed: Matthew Cleveland (13.8 PPG, transfer portal), Caleb Mills (13.0 PPG, transferred to Memphis), Naheem McLeod (3.8 PPG, transfer portal), Jeremiah Bembry (transfer portal)
In limbo: N/A
Returning: Darin Green Jr. (13.4 PPG), Cam’Ron Fletcher (10.8 PPG), Cam Corhen (8.3 PPG), Jalen Warley (6.8 PPG), Baba Miller (4.3 PPG), De’Ante Green (1.5 PPG), Tom House (1.5 PPG), Chandler Jackson (3.6 PPG)
Newcomers: Taylor Bowen (four-star), Jamir Watkins (9.5 PPG at VCU), Josh Nickelberry (10.9 PPG at La Salle)
The skinny: Cleveland and Mills transferring away from Florida State is a tough look for the ‘Noles, but the additions of Watkins and Nickelberry make so much sense for Florida State. Leonard Hamilton has not been able to land one of the impact lead guards so far, so a Year 3 breakout from Warley would be a welcome surge. There’s still real talent on this roster. NBA decision-makers will be watching Fletcher and Miller very closely.
Departed: Dariq Whitehead (8.3 PPG, NBA Draft entree), Dereck Lively II (5.2 PPG, NBA Draft entree), Jacob Grandison (4.4 PPG),
In limbo: Jeremy Roach (13.6 PPG, NBA Draft entree)
Returning: Kyle Filipowski (15.1 PPG), Tyrese Proctor (9.4 PPG), Mark Mitchell (9.1 PPG), Ryan Young (6.4 PPG), Jaylen Blakes (3.4 PPG), Christian Reeves (1.5 PPG)
Newcomers: Sean Stewart (five-star), Jared McCain (five-star), Caleb Foster (five-star), TJ Power (five-star)
The skinny: Retaining Filipowski, Proctor and Mitchell shows that Jon Scheyer is not messing around. The Duke coach shouldn’t have any issues with role identification thanks to so many returners. This is shaping up to be one of the most-talented rosters in the country – even if Roach opts not to return.
Departed: Caleb Love (16.7 PPG, transferred to Michigan), Pete Nance (10.0 PPG), Leaky Black (7.3 PPG), Puff Johnson (4.1 PPG, transferred to Penn State), Will Shaver (0.7 PPG, transferred to Belmont), Dontrez Styles (1.4 PPG, transferred to Georgetown), Justin McKoy (1.7 PPG, transferred to Hawaii), Tyler Nickel (2.1 PPG, transferred to Virginia Tech)
In limbo: N/A
Returning: R.J. Davis (16.1 PPG), Armando Bacot (15.9 PPG), D’Marco Dunn (2.7 PPG), Seth Trimble (1.8 PPG), Jalen Washington (2.2 PPG)
Newcomers: Simeon Wilcher (four-star), Zayden High (four-star), Harrison Ingram (10.5 PPG at Stanford), Cormac Ryan (12.3 PPG at Notre Dame), Jae’Lyn Withers (8.9 PPG at Louisville), Paxson Wojcik (14.9 PPG at Brown)
The skinny: Shooting, shooting and more shooting. Wojcik, Withers and Ryan are all strong snipers Hubert Davis targeted in the transfer portal to complement a new Big Three of Davis, Bacot and Ingram. It will be weird to see Caleb Love suiting up for Michigan, but sometimes, divorce might be a good thing. The roles will be more defined, and the role players make a lot more sense.
