BYU’s Lauren Gustin, the nation’s leading rebounder during the 2022-23 season, has entered the women’s college basketball transfer portal to explore her options.
The 6-foot-1 junior forward averaged 16 points and 16.6 rebounds per game last season. In three years as a starter, Gustin has totaled 1,190 rebounds, second only to former Cougar All-American Tina Gunn Robison, who had 1,482 from 1976-1980.
Gustin posted on social media to Cougar Nation, “I can’t thank you enough for the love and support you have given me the last four years at BYU. It has been such a privilege to be a part of the women’s basketball program. To my coaches, team trainers and teammates, past and present, thank you for pushing me, loving me and supporting me. I will never forget the memories made with you all. To the BYU athletic department, the university donors and the ROC, thank you for helping create this great program – you make BYU an amazing place. As a graduate student with just one year of eligibility remaining, I have entered the transfer portal to explore additional opportunities.”
This marks the second straight year that BYU’s best player has entered the transfer portal. Last season, Shaylee Gonzales transferred to Texas where she was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Gonzales and Gustin were high school teammates in Arizona and won a state championship together before playing together for two seasons at BYU.
Cougar coach Amber Whiting, who posted a 16-17 record in her first season, is bringing in a very talented recruiting class as the school makes the transition into the Big 12. The team is also taking a summer trip to Italy. But apparently those factors weren’t enough to keep Gustin out of the portal.
It is still possible Gustin could return to Provo but her rebounding prowess should make her an attractive target for many college basketball programs.
BYU senior third baseman Austin Deming has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance last week versus Utah and UNC Greensboro at Miller Park.
Deming was also honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as one of its National Players of the Week. He joins teammate Cole Gambill, who also received both honors last week.
Deming, from Santa Clara, Utah, led the Cougars to a 3-1 record, including a series sweep (14-8, 19-8, 13-11) of the Spartans.
In four non-conference games, he hit .706 (12 for 17), had 4 home runs, 4 doubles, scored 11 runs and had 15 RBI. He totaled 30 bases with an OBP of .737 and a slugging percentage of 1.647.
Deming hit safely in all four games, including multiple hits in three of the four outings. In game three of the UNCG series on Saturday, Deming hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning that proved to be the game winner and clinch the series sweep.
Through 38 games of the 2023 season, Deming leads BYU in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.436), runs (36), RBI (50), doubles (10), home runs (16), total bases (106) and slugging percentage (.964).
The WCC Player of the Week Award is the second of Deming’s BYU career. He also earned the honor last year on May 9 as a junior, on his way to being selected First Team All-WCC by the league’s coaches.
BYU returns to conference play this week with a three-game series versus Portland, April 27-29, at Miller Park.
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – The West Coast Conference has released the bracket and match times for the 2023 WCC Men’s Tennis Tournament, scheduled for this Thursday-Saturday, April 27-29, in San Diego. BYU has qualified for the tournament as the No. 5 seed.
The Cougars will face fourth-seeded Portland on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. PDT. The Pilots won the teams’ regular season contest 4-0 on March 25 in Portland, Oregon. The winner of Thursday’s opening round match will advance to Friday’s semifinal versus San Diego, the tournament’s top seed.
The full schedule is available on the conference’s tournament central website, which also features live stream and live score links. In addition, those links will be available on BYU’s team website and social media accounts.
BYU finished 4-5 in WCC play and qualified for the six-team tournament by nature of the conference’s second tiebreaker: wins against common WCC opponents beginning at the top of the standings. A 4-2 win over San Diego, the Toreros’ lone conference loss, was ultimately the difference for the Cougars.
Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University will host the entire tournament. The women’s tournament will also be held concurrently at the same venue.
This is the sixth season the WCC has used the six-team format. The Cougars have made five of those tournaments and are looking for their first-ever WCC title.
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Allysha Mae Mateo was named to the All-WCC First Team for the third straight year, the West Coast Conference announced Monday.
“Allysha Mae had one of the best seasons in our program’s history,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “She played such consistent golf all year long, each week finishing inside the top 15. She has been an integral part of our team for the past five years and I look forward to all she’ll accomplish in the future.”
Mateo earned a 10-place finish at last week’s WCC Championship to cap a 2022-23 campaign in which she picked up her second collegiate win at the Miami Hurricane Invitational. This season, she also picked up 10 top-25 finishes, eight top 15s and four top 5s.
The fifth-year senior finished runner-up at the USF Intercollegiate, third at the FAU Paradise Invitational, fifth at the Causeway Invitational, sixth at the San Diego State Classic, ninth at the Avenue Spring Break Classic, 10th at the Riverside Classic and WCC Championship and 11th at Juli Inkster Meadow Club Invitational.
“The career Allysha has had is nothing short of remarkable,” said Roberts. “She is one of the best players and people to come through our program. She has been consistent since her sophomore year, and did an amazing job taking her game to the next level.”
The three-time WCC All-Academic Team honoree will graduate this week with a Master of Accountancy degree from BYU’s Marriott School of Business.
Mateo and the Cougars will learn if and where they will be competing in an NCAA Regional when the sites are announced on Wednesday. The selection show will air on the Golf Channel at 11 a.m. MDT on Wednesday, April 26.
