When will LeBron hit 40,000 points?
Even at age 38, LeBron James continues to amaze — and he continues to make NBA history.
James on Tuesday night became the first NBA player to reach 39,000 points with a first-quarter three-pointer against the Utah Jazz during In-Season Tournament group stage action. James, who became the Association‘s all-time scoring leader last season, continues to add to his margin atop the scoring chart — and he shows little to no sign of slowing down as his 39th birthday approaches.
LeBron continues to defy Father Time with a string of difference-making performances for an inconsistent Los Angeles Lakers team. In 14 games this season, James has scored at least 30 points five times — and he has shot under 50 percent from the field only once.
James sat for the fourth quarter of the Lakers‘ 131-99 blowout win over the Jazz, but he had a typically-efficient 17 points on 10 shots, adding nine assists and seven rebounds for the cause. It dropped James‘ points-per-game average on the season to “just” 25.7 a night.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — who James surpassed in February to become the NBA‘s all-time scoring leader — averaged 23.4 points per game as a 38-year-old during the 1985/86 season. James, who was a year old at the time, is poised to break that record, too.
What makes LeBron so special? One of his teammates tried to explain
At some point this season, James will hit the 40,000-point mark. Assuming he stays healthy, it’s inevitable. But the question for every NBA fan is…”when?”
James has a career scoring average of 27.2 points per game. He is now 988 points away from 40,000. If he averages 25 points per night for the next 40 games — and, of course, stays healthy — James should reach 40,000, and thus set a new milestone for scoring, sometime in February 2024.
Coincidentally, the Lakers‘ 40th game from Tuesday night takes place on Feb. 22 at Chase Center — meaning LeBron could break his own record one more time against the Golden State Warriors, his longtime nemeses.
