Adou Thiero, Otega Oweh, Cade Tyson headline top available transfer wings – 247Sports
There are less than two weeks remaining until the May 1 close of this year’s college basketball transfer portal window and the flow of players into the portal is finally starting to slow to a drip. There will still be a few more entrants, but the portal is starting to take shape and if you are in need of a wing scorer, then you had better start moving fast to lock in your guy.
Currently, only 10 of the top 60 players in the portal are considered wing scorers with the top wings like Tucker DeVries and Kobe Johnson being locked up by West Virginia and UCLA fairly early in the process.

With those two and some others like Michael Ajayi (Gonzaga), PJ Haggerty (Memphis) and Tramon Mark (Texas) already off the board, let’s examine the top 10 available wing scorers in the transfer portal. A lot could happen this weekend, so it would not be a surprise if more of these guys come off the board sooner than later.

A late-bloomer coming out of high school, Adou Thiero signed with Kentucky in large part because of John Calipari. The now Arkansas took a chance on Theiero after having coached his father at Memphis. While Thiero’s stats aren’t particularly eye-catching, anybody who has watched the high-energy and freaky athletic forward know just how much potential he has and how quickly he is improving. Because of his strong 220-pound frame and 6-foot-8 size, Thiero has the versatility to play as a small ball four or a big wing and he’s highly switchable on the defensive end, a trait that coaching staffs love. 247Sports firmly believes that he’s on the verge of a breakout.
Surely new Kentucky coach Mark Pope would love to find a way to lure Thiero back into the fold but that seems like a pretty big ask even if there hasn’t yet been much talk about where Thiero’s next stop will be.

A four-star prospect coming out of high school who initially chose Oklahoma over Illinois, Otega Oweh was one of the most improved players in the country as a sophomore. A powerful wing scorer with athleticism and the ability to finish through contact at the rim, the biggest development of Oweh’s game was his jump shooting. He doesn’t take that many threes just yet, but his nearly 38% shooting from three on 1.7 attempts per game, after making just one his entire freshman season, is a major step forward. Oweh is the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Odafe Oweh.

If Cade Tyson is one of, if not the best pure three-point shooters in the transfer portal. As a sophomore at Belmont, Tyson he made 46.5% of his shots from deep and he did so while taking 5.5 of them per game. On top of that, he’s nearly 6-foot-7, has a sturdy frame and is a good athlete. His older brother Hunter Tyson is a member of the Denver Nuggets and Cade’s progression has been very similar.

Ranking: No. 28 overall
Rated among the Top-45 players in the country by 247Sports as a recruit out of Texas, Rylan Griffen nearly doubled his production from his freshman to his sophomore season. A high-flying athlete with length, Griffen improved tremendously as a jump shooter and is now one of the top snipers in the portal. He made 74 threes at a 39.1% clip during his second year of college.

Shooting guard Roddy Gayle Jr. was a Top-50 type coming out of high school and saw a sophomore production bump last season at Ohio State A solidly put-together 6-foot-4 wing from New York, Gayle started all but one game in year two and went for 15 or more points 15 times including a career-high 32 in an overtime win over West Virginia. A dip in his three-point shooting from nearly 43% as a freshman to just 28.4% as a sophomore is a bit of a concern but he’s shown enough in the past to believe that he’ll get that fixed and his 83.2% free throw shooting is indicative of his stroke.

A McDonald’s All-American in the class of 2023 and the son of NBA All-Star Peja Stojakovic, Stanford transfer Andrej Stojakovic could end up being a major addition. At 6-foot-7, he’s got great size, pedigree and while he wasn’t necessarily consistent as a freshman, it’s easy to project him developing into a high-level college wing player. In 2023-24, Stojakovic layed 22.3 minutes in 32 games and made 10 starts. He shot 40.9 percent from the field (99-for-242) and 32.7 percent from three (34-for-104).

After steadily improving during his first three seasons at Washington State, TJ Bamba saw his minutes and points dip a bit during his senior season at Villanova. With his Covid Year available to him, Bamba is once again portal bound. With nearly 1,200 points under his belt and the proven ability to shoot it from three – he’s hit 144 from deep at 38% during his career – Bamba is going to be heavily recruited again.
This time last year he had programs like Auburn, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, St. John’s, Tennessee, Texas and several others involved and it wouldn’t be a surprise if a few of them took a second swing at the native New Yorker.

The Horizon League Player of the Year in the 2023-24 season, Trey Townsend introduced himself to the college basketball world during Oakland’s NCAA Tournament upset of Kentucky. During two games in the tourney, he averaged 23.5 points and 12.5 rebounds and proved to be a very tough matchup problem. Some might argue he’s really more of a small ball four man than a true wing scorer. He’s not a major three-point threat. But the dude can play.

Through a pair of seasons at Loyola (Chicago), Saint Thomas hadn’t exactly put-up big numbers. After moving to Northern Colorado where he took over for Tennessee star Dalton Knecht as a junior, Thomas flourished and earned first-team All-Big Sky and conference newcomer of the year honors. A do-it-all wing who cleans the class, initiates offense and scores inside and out, Thomas was as improved as any player in America as a junior.

This is the second year in a row that Tyrin Lawrence has entered the portal. Unlike last year, though, we don’t expect Lawrence to return to Vanderbilt. Lawrence may not be the best jump shooter of the high scoring wings in the portal, but he is one of the most electric when it comes to getting to the basket and scoring points in bunches. His recruitment has been eerily quiet
