Re-ranking college basketball's top transfers – 247Sports

It was another wild offseason with hundreds of college basketball players entering the transfer portal.
Some of the biggest names in the sport opted to find a new home. Some of those stars have lived up to their billings while others have fallen to the wayside. Meanwhile, a couple of unassuming players have surprised fans with their play. Knowing what we know now, it seems like a perfect time to re-rank the top-25 players from the 2023 transfer portal.
Stats: 18.7 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.3 BPG, 1.2 SPG (59.2% FGs, 37.8% from three)
Team Record: 17-4, 5-3 Big 12
No. 8 (AP Poll), No. 13 (NET), No. 15 (KenPom)
Hunter Dickinson had loads of hype and pressure to deliver at Kansas this season. So far, Dickinson has absolutely delivered on his end.
Dickinson is imposing his will in the paint every night. But, he’s also shown the improvements in his shotmaking from mid-range and three.
Through 20 games, Dickinson has 11 double-doubles and nine games with 20 or more points. It’s scary to think where this Kansas team would be they didn’t land Dickinson.
Stats: 20.1 PPG, 4.6 APG, 1.8 APG (49.0% FGs, 40.2% from three)
Team Record: 15-5, 5-2 SEC
No. 5 (AP Poll), No. 5 (NET), No. 5 (KenPom)
Dalton Knecht has taken the SEC by storm this year after making his to Knoxville from JUCO and Northern Colorado.
He was a top-15 ranked transfer by 247Sports in the offseason, but he has clearly proven that he could be the No. 1 transfer this season.
He’s a lethal shot-maker with a competitive streak. In his last five games, Knecht has eclipsed 30 points in four outings after slumping in a win against Alabama (he scored 25 points against the Crimson Tide while shooting 1-of-6 from three).
Not only is Knecht likely to be a First-Team All-American, but he could also become a first-round NBA draft pick come June.
Stats: 19.3 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.1 SPG (44.9% FGs, 34.7% from three)
Team Record: 15-5, 6-3 Pac-12
No. 11 (AP Poll), No. 3 (NET), No. 4 (KenPom)
Hunter Dickinson wasn’t the only player grabbing headlines this offseason. Caleb Love also generated a lot of attention during his exit from North Carolina.
After making the decision to leave the Tar Heels, Love decided to try to join Dickinson’s ex-school, Michigan. But, it appears as though Love was lucky that that fell through.
He ended up making his way to Arizona where his fit with Tommy Lloyd’s style of play is a lot more beneficial for Love. Love has been far more efficient and consistent in Tucson than he was at UNC. He’s playing more like the player we had been expecting to see when he graduated high school as a 5-star recruit.
Stats: 14.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.5 SPG (49.3% FGs, 45.4% from three)
Team Record: 18-2, 8-1 Big East
No. 1 (AP Poll), No. 4 (NET), No. 3 (KenPom)
UConn is proving all doubters wrong, yet again. Dan Hurley and the Huskies are absolutely rolling right now and a big piece to this team’s success has been due to the addition of Cam Spencer.
Spencer may not have the physical evaluators like size, length and athleticism, but he’s proving why those things are being overvalued. While he looks like a YMCA legend, his toughness, IQ, confidence, skill and shot-making are making him an absolute star in Storrs.
UConn had a major void to fill after the departure of Jordan Hawkins and Spencer has done more than enough to fill it.
Stats: 13.4 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.3 BPG (52.6% FGs, 37.9% from three)
Team Record: 15-4, 5-2 SEC
No. 10 (AP Poll), No. 21 (NET), No. 21 (KenPom)
In a wild twist of events, Tre Mitchell ended up hitting the portal very late into the offseason and Kentucky was able to pick up a crucial piece to this year’s roster.
Mitchell’s skill and experience have been valuable for this young team. His skillset on the court has also been a great compliment to Kentucky’s up-tempo style. Mitchell spaces the floor with his shot-making and has been an impact rebounder and defender. But most notably, his passing has been a very valuable asset in the high post and on the block.
Mitchell is one of the most efficient players to have hit the portal last season and Kentucky is often been at their best when he’s playing the five.
Stats: 15.1 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.1 SPG (40.0% FGs, 37.8% from three)
Team Record: 19-2, 6-2 Big 12
No. 4 (AP Poll), No. 1 (NET), No. 1 (KenPom)
It’s extremely difficult to replace a guy like Marcus Sasser. But with the elevated play of Jamal Shead and the offseason transfer addition of LJ Cryer, the Houston Cougars were able to fill the void Sasser left and they are thriving
Despite moving up into the Big 12, Houston sits at 19-2 (6-2 in the Big 12) and are ranked as a top-5 team in the country. Cryer was one of the biggest players to transfer last season. He has lived up to his billing with his potent jumper and his defense. Also, he’s leading the Cougars in scoring this season.
Stats: 19.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.3 BPG, 1.0 SPG (59.5% FGs)
Team Record: 19-2, 7-1 Mountain West
No. 17 (AP Poll), No. 20 (NET), No. 31 (KenPom)
If you haven’t heard of Great Osobor over at Utah State, then now would be a good time to familiarize yourself.
He came from nowhere after transferring from Montana State in the offseason where he averaged just 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds a game as a sophomore.
Osobor has now become a dominant force for Utah State in the paint and has been the muscle behind the Aggies’ 19-2 start this season, ranking No. 17 in the country and No. 1 in the Mountain West.
Osobor is basically the Adama Sanogo of Logan, Utah.
Stats: 15.0 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 3.5 APG, 0.9 BPG, 1.6 SPG (67.9% FGs)
Team Record: 16-6, 5-2 WCC
Unranked (AP Poll), No. 58 (NET), No. 64 (KenPom)
Jonathan Mogbo wasn’t the San Francisco transfer who had everyone talking in the offseason, but he has everyone talking now.
He transferred up the ranks like Knecht from JUCO to Missouri State and has found his new home at San Francisco. Playing for the Dons, Mogbo has been a dominant force inside the paint, running the floor and has shown a lot of exciting flashes as a passer.
He ranks No. 8 in the country in double-doubles this season with 11. His efficiency and effectiveness on both ends of the floor have caught the attention of NBA scouts.
Stats: 21.8 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.6 APG (46.5% FGs, 38.1 % from three)
Team Record: 15-5, 4-3 American
Unranked (AP Poll), No. 68 (NET), No. 63 (KenPom)
David Jones has made his rounds through the portal, but he’s flourishing in his new home at Memphis.
After heading to a sinking DePaul program out of high school and then a sinking St. John’s program, Memphis has been a perfect fit for Jones. Despite Memphis losing three straight games, there is no denying the production and impact Jones has made on this program.
He can still improve on his decision making, but he’s now playing to the level of talent that we’re used to seeing from him.
Stats: 12.1 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.3 SPG (41.9% FGs, 40.0% from three)
Team Record: 17-4, 9-1 ACC
No. 3 (AP Poll), No. 9 (NET) No. 7 (KenPom)
Despite a hiccup on Tuesday night, Hubert Davis has the Tar Heels back on track and rolling. The Tar Heels are 17-4 after a tumultuous 2022-23 season and a big contributor to their redemption tour has been Harrison Ingram.
The former 5-star prospect is in the best shape of his life and is playing the best basketball of his career. In every category, Ingram has elevated his game. He’s thriving as a small ball 4 who is a mismatch on the perimeter.
