Network will Air High School, College, and NBA Action on Jan. 20 in Showcase of Exceptional Basketball Talent across Greater Washington Region
Washington, D.C. In celebration of basketball across the National Capital region, Monumental Sports Network will air eight live hoops games on Saturday, January 20 as part of the second annual “Basketball Day in the DMV” presented by CarMax. The event, presented in partnership with the NBA’s Washington Wizards, will feature games across several levels of basketball – five high school games, two college games, and the Wizards-Spurs game on Saturday night.
“The Greater Washington region has a rich basketball tradition at all levels and we are honored to showcase all our local hoops talent during ‘Basketball Day in the DMV’,” said Friday Abernethy, General Manager, Monumental Sports Network. “While many people are familiar with Monumental Sports Network because of our professional sports team coverage of the Washington Wizards, Capitals, and Mystics, elevating local sports and providing a platform for our talented local athletes is a core value for our organization and we are proud to use our new network and digital assets to foster a sense of community at all levels of athletics across our region.”
The high school games will feature select boys and girls basketball teams from throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (the DMV), including Sandy Spring (MD), Good Counsel (MD), Largo (MD), South Lakes (VA), Bullis (MD), Holy Child (MD), St. John’s College (D.C.), Bishop O’Connell (VA), Hayfield (VA), and Patriot (VA). The broadcast schedule includes four games from the Capitol Hoops Challenge taking place at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA, as well as one game from Capital One Arena which will be played at 1:00 p.m. Towson University (MD) men’s basketball and George Washington University (D.C.) women’s basketball will take part in the college basketball broadcasts.
“Basketball Day in the DMV” represents a special opportunity for college and high school athletes to showcase their abilities on a major platform, as more than three million households are included in Monumental Sports Network’s broadcast footprint. Monumental is producing and airing the five high school games at no cost to the schools and each game will include a professional broadcast team similar to those featured at a Wizards or Capitals game, including on-air play-by-play, color commentary, and sideline reporting. Announcers include elite Monumental on-air talent like Christy Winters-Scott, Jimmy Patsos, Wes Hall, and Chase Hughes.
Local basketball fans can watch the games through their Pay TV subscription, on monumentalsportsnetwork.com, or by downloading the Monumental streaming app on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV and using an eligible TV Everywhere log-in.
In addition to being the exclusive local television media rights holder for the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards, and WNBA’s Washington Mystics, in November Monumental Sports Network announced partnerships with George Washington University, University of Richmond, and Towson University to air live college basketball games on the network during the upcoming season. Monumental’s 2023-24 college basketball slate features 50 games, including 21 women’s games and more than 20 games from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Continuing the synergy of the day, the Wizards will wear a special “Behan Strong” shooting shirt when the San Antonio Spurs come to Capital One Arena on Saturday night to recognize and honor former St. John’s High School basketball coach, Pat Behan, as well as to continue to raise awareness about Behan’s courageous fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
The shooting shirts worn by players will be auctioned off to raise money in Behan’s name, with proceeds benefitting Compassionate Care ALS, whose mission is to support people diagnosed with ALS, their families, healthcare providers, and communities as they navigate the complexities, both physical and emotional, associated with the disease. The auction will begin at 6 pm EST on Saturday and close at 3 pm EST on Tuesday, January 30. Fans who are interested can visit WashingtonWizards.com/BehanStrong
