Wisconsin men’s basketball point guard Chucky Hepburn collected six assists and no turnovers Wednesday against UW-Stevens Point. That’s no surprise to those who have watched Hepburn play all preseason.
The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team tips off the 2023-24 regular season Monday against Arkansas State at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers start the season with plenty of promise, returning all five starters from a season ago, adding a high profile transfer in wing AJ Storr and starting the season just outside the top 25 in the preseason AP men’s basketball rankings. Wisconsin made the most of its tune-up against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, nearly doubling up the Pointers in a 87-44 exhibition victory.
Arkansas State assistant Derek Rongstad will coach the first game of his assistant coaching career back in the area he grew up. A native of Middleton, Rongstad was a two-time First Team All-Big 8 Conference selection at Middleton High School, having averaged 13.1 points per game in his career. He signed with UW-Milwaukee out of high school, playing for then-Milwaukee and current Badgers assistant Sharif Chambliss.
He finished his playing career at UW-Whitewater before entering the coaching profession as a graduate assistant at Alabama. He served in that role for two years and then was promoted to coordinator of video services. After two years with that title, he joined new Arkansas State men’s basketball coach Bryan Hodgson (a former Alabama assistant) as an assistant with the Red Wolves.
Wisconsin men’s basketball gave its first look at a revamped rotation in the exhibition, most notably bringing last season’s freshman sensation Connor Essegian off the bench with Storr taking his spot in the starting lineup. He shot 3-of-9 from 3-point range against the Pointers in 14 minutes.
The game will not be on TV. It instead is scheduled to be broadcast on B1G+, which is a subscription streaming service.
Customers can subscribe for a conference pass ($14.95 per month or $119.95 per year), school pass ($9.95 per month or $79.95 per year) or sport pass ($54.99 per year for men’s and women’s basketball).
The game will be broadcast on 101.5 FM and 1310 AM in the Madison area as part of the Badger Sports Network.

The Badgers cruised in their unofficial opener to the 2023-24 season.
The forward was a four-star recruit and consensus top-125 prospect prior to enrolling this summer.
Arkansas State assistant Derek Rongstad, from Middleton, will start his assistant coaching career against the team he grew up watching.
The Badgers can have players in their more appropriate positions to create spacing and defensive versatility.
Chucky Hepburn had the freedom to create his own shot and win games for Wisconsin. He struggled. Now he’s ready.
The Badgers guard entered the starting lineup last season but came off the bench in the season opener against Arkansas State.
