New Orleans rookie Jordan Hawkins produced one of the best games by a first-year Pelican in recent memory Monday, while Zion Williamson nearly registered a triple-double. Off the bench, sharpshooter Matt Ryan joined Hawkins in raining down a barrage of three-pointers in Ball Arena. Despite all of those positive Pelicans developments, Denver showed why it is the NBA’s reigning champion, overcoming a significant first-half deficit en route to a convincing victory.

DENVER — The New Orleans Pelicans fell apart like wet tissue paper in the third quarter of Saturday’s home loss to the Atlanta Hawks. They got outscored by 18 points in the quarter.
On Monday, the Pelicans once again watched their first-half lead get wiped away in the third quarter. The defending champion Denver Nuggets outscored the Pelicans 40-21 in the third.

Near the end of his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, CJ McCollum dealt with a pneumothorax in his right lung that sidelined him for 18 games.
The injury, which occurs when air leaks between a person’s lung and their chest wall, kept McCollum out of the lineup for almost six weeks.

New Orleans knew they needed a spark to replace CJ McCollum in the lineup on Monday. They got just that from rookie Jordan Hawkins, but it wasn’t enough, as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Pelicans 134-116 on Monday night. The loss drops New Orleans to 4-3 on the season.
