North Carolina basketball hosts Division II St. Augustine’s University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Center. The exhibition game marks the first official action of the 2023-24 season for the new-look Tar Heel roster.
Located in Raleigh, St. Augustine’s holds the distinction as the most decorated Division II athletics program, with a record 37 NCAA team titles and 265 individual titles. The Falcons compete in the CIAA and went 8-18 last season on the basketball court.
Head coach Chucky Brown, a former NC State player, will lead the Falcons program for the second season. His top returning scorer is 6-foot-6 forward Nemo Johnson, who was named to All-CIAA Rookie Team a year ago. St. Augustine’s was picked to finish last in the CIAA’s preseason poll, as voted by the conference’s coaches.
UNC and St. Augustine’s shared one similar opponent last season, Johnson C. Smith. The Tar Heels beat the Bulls 101-40 in an exhibition game, while the Falcons fell 93-58 in the regular season.

UNC used an experienced starting lineup of RJ Davis, Paxson Wojcik, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram and Armando Bacot during its 79-63 win over Florida Atlantic in Saturday’s secret scrimmage. That same five is expected to start against the Falcons this weekend.
“It was a good test to see where we’re at as a team,” Davis said of the scrimmage against FAU. “I was encouraged in terms of the potential I see with this team, and where we can be. We did a lot of good things in terms of moving the ball, playing defense.”
FAU became an NCAA Tournament darling last season while piling up a 35-4 record and mounting a run to the first Final Four in program history. Coach Dusty May’s Owls are ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll, while UNC checks in at No. 19.
RJ Davis said Wednesday that he would grade UNC’s overall performance in the scrimmage at FAU as “a solid B-plus.” Individually, Inside Carolina sources confirmed the veteran guard Davis had a big game.
Bacot said he didn’t put up remarkable numbers but was impressed by UNC’s defense and depth.
“I was highly encouraged,” Bacot said. “It was in a game where I had single-digit points and rebounds, and we still were able to go out there and perform at a high level. RJ was amazing. I was really surprised at how great we were on defense. We played great team defense. Offensively, Harrison stepped up with Cormac and Elliot pushing the ball. Jalen Washington gave us a boost. It was very encouraging for me.”
UNC hosts Radford for its season-opener on Nov. 6. The Tar Heels host Lehigh and UC Riverside over the following two weeks before traveling to the Bahamas to compete in Battle 4 Atlantis.
