New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado suffered an ankle sprain during a workout this weekend and his availability for training camp is in question, sources tell <a href="https://twitter.com/TheAthletic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@TheAthletic</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/Stadium?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Stadium</a>.
Alvarado averaged nine points, three assists and 2.3 rebounds across 61 games for the Pelicans in 2022-23. He notably was supposed to be on Puerto Rico’s FIBA Basketball World Cup team but dropped out as a precaution for the upcoming regular season.
Alvarado suffered a leg injury late last season that ended his year, which weighed into his decision to forego the World Cup. He had improved on his rookie season, when he averaged 6.1 points and 2.8 assists in 54 games, and is seen as a spark plug off of the bench for the Pelicans.
Last December, he scored a career-high 38 points in a 121-106 victory over the eventual champion Denver Nuggets.
Training camp for the NBA is set to begin October 3, so his status being uncertain could have an impact on the preseason and beyond. The Pelicans open up preseason play on Oct. 10.
New Orleans went 42-40 in 2022-23 and lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the play-in tournament. It has missed the playoffs in four of the last five seasons.
