College Basketball Transfer Portal Updates: News from Tuesday, March 14 – 247Sports
Monday signaled the opening the college basketball’s transfer portal that will remain open for 60 days, coming to a conclusion on May 11th.
Day one saw an explosion of 179 transfers highlighted by the current top-rated transfer in the portal – JJ Starling.
Day two, thus far, has been far less climactic with just 29 entries halfway through the day but we have seen one star already hit.
Who was it and what else do you need to be aware of? Let’s dive in.
Georgetown point guard Primo Spears is the first player to hit the portal since the departure of head coach Patrick Ewing.
Spears made his way to Georgetown in the 2022 off-season through the transfer portal after his freshman season at Duquesne.
In his lone season with the Hoyas, he averaged 16.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
Since Spears has already used his one-time transfer waiver, it is expected he will need to be granted a waiver by the NCAA to play next season if he doesn’t return to Georgetown.
Georgetown is still without a head coach.
Temple star guard Khalif Battle has entered his name into the transfer portal.
Battle, a 6-foot-5 bucket-getter, averaged 17.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Owls this season.
Despite having spent four season in college basketball already, he still has two years of eligibility remaining due to receiving a redshirt as well as receiving a covid year.
Battle had not been with the Temple team dating back to being benched against Wichita State on February 16th.
Behind Starling at the top of the transfer portal ratings is a new addition that hit the portal on Tuesday, enter Jameer Nelson Jr.
Yes, he is exactly who his name says he is, the son of former NBA player Jameer Nelson.
Junior is going to be one of the most coveted guards in the entire portal, capable of helping any team in the country – blue bloods included.
He is an athletic, tough and dynamic guard able to create anytime he chooses.
He averaged 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game for Delaware this season. Nelson was selected to the All-CAA First Team alongside another coveted portal prospect – Nicolas Timberlake.
There have been rumblings that Myles Stute would transfer so the announcement itself was not a surprise but the timing of it was.
Vanderbilt is set to compete in the NIT Tournament as a No. 2 seed and even though they play Yale this evening at 9:00 PM, he decided he would rather get a head start on the portal process than play in the tournament.
Stute started in 26 of Vanderbilt’s 34 games this season, averaging 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds, shooting 36.1% from three this season.
JJ Starling was on the transfer market for less than 24-hours making the expected decision to head back home to play for Syracuse.
247Sports’ Eric Bossi logged that prediction on Monday shortly after he entered and less than 24hours later, it came true.
Starling, a former five-star guard and the current top-rated transfer in the portal, grew up just a few miles from campus and had previously considered the Orange in high school before heading to play for Notre Dame.
Entering the season, Starling was projected as a first round pick and although his year didn’t go according to plan, shooting the ball poorly and Mike Brey departing, he still has a bright future playing for Red Autry.
Late on Monday night, two members of the North Carolina Tar Heels entered the transfer portal. One being a member of the magical run last March in Justin McKoy.
Second being a former four-star recruit and freshman in college basketball – Tyler Nickel.
McKoy’s career at North Carolina did not go as hoped for. He played in 41 games in his two season, only making 11 appearances in 2022-23. He made his way to Chapel Hill by taking the portal out of Virginia.
He averaged 1.7 points and 1.2 rebounds this season.
As for Nickel, he appeared in 25 games this season, averaging six-minutes a game and posting 2.1 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.3 assists.
