Hosting its first state playoff game in program history, Wyomissing gave the sold-out crowd something to cheer about on Saturday.
The Spartans dominated from start to finish to beat Parkway Center City 69-24 in the opening round of the PIAA Class 4A girls basketball playoffs.
“It means everything to me,” Wyomissing senior Lexi Loeb said about securing a win in her last home game. “It was really nice to do it with these people.”
Loeb led the Spartans with 15 points, all coming via the 3-pointer. Her five 3s tied a career high.
“You got to mark her up, because she can shoot the ball,” Wyomissing coach Aaron Anders said. “You leave Lexi open, she’s going to make shots.”
The victory was the Spartans’ first state playoff win since 2004. Wyomissing (27-2) finishes the year 14-1 at home.
“Wyomissing girls basketball is becoming an event in this community,” Anders said. “And that’s the whole vision, the whole purpose of this.”
Sophomore Amaya Stewart and junior Annie McCaffrey each finished with 14 points. In total, 11 different Spartans scored.
“We got a dynamite team,” Anders said. “We’re hard to stop.”
The Berks and District 3 Class 4A champions, the Spartans led the District 12 fifth-place Bulldogs (9-6) by 22 points after one quarter and remained comfortably ahead the rest of the game. Wyomissing led 47-13 at the half.
“We’re always coming to play,” Spartans senior Maddie Campbell said. “Playing together was the key.”
Wyomissing will continue its state playoff run in the second round on Wednesday against Neumann-Goretti, the District 12 third-place team, at a site and time to be determined.
No matter the location or the opponent, the Spartans believe they can build off Saturday’s win.
“Once we found our composure, I think that was big for us,” Loeb said. “We know that it’s win or go home at this point, and if we keep our composure, run our sets, play our defense — we’ll be just fine.”
