A catch-up with the NBA rumor mill as the near season draws closer
We may still be a couple of months away from the start of the new NBA season, but we still have plenty to talk about this off-season.
As ever, there is a revolving door between NBA stars, with trade requests and team switches aplenty between the end of last season and the start of a new one.
Every year we see some of the game’s biggest stars requesting trades, whether it’s down to falling outs with head coaches or simply because the player wants a change of scenery.
This off-season has been no different, and as rumors continue to swirl, we have rounded up some of the biggest likely trade requests ahead of the new season.
Lillard‘s trade makes much more sense, with The Blazers also conveniently looking to undergo a rebuild.
The only issue is that Lillard is said to have his mind set on the Miami Heat, and while that may make for an easy trade, if it’s not Miami, the trade market might die down because of the player’s clear preference. The Blazers are also expected to make big demands for Lillard as they look to arm themselves with capital, be it through personnel or otherwise.
Harden‘s trade request came as a surprise for most after a pretty successful season for the 76ers. But the 76ers are no pushovers, and this trade might take time as a result.
The Los Angeles Clippers are being heavily linked, but they may struggle to convince the 76ers with the capital they are likely to offer.
The New York Knicks have also been linked, but a trade to the same conference may be out of the question.
With James Harden already wanting out, the 76ers may find themselves in total panic mode before the summer ends. That’s because MVP winner Embild has set alarm bells ringing with some interesting quotes.
He said recently: “I just want to win a championship, whatever it takes. I don’t know where that’s going to be, whether it’s in Philly or anywhere else.”
While that doesn’t mean Embild will push for an exit immediately, it is a real concern for the 76ers, who now know the urgency their star man has to win and win quickly.
It emerged in the Spring that the Mavericks were growing concerned about the possibility of Doncic requesting a trade in 2024 amid lagging progress from the team.
With the Mavericks expected to struggle again during the coming season, it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Doncic decided to request a trade a year earlier than reported.
Doncic has now been with Dallas for five years, and the superstar deserves to be in a team that is at least attempting to get into championship contention. The Mavs don’t look anywhere near at this point in time, and Doncic may have had enough.
LaVine has been linked with a departure from Chicago for some time. Yahoo Sports reported in June that the Bulls were exploring the extent of LaVine‘s trade market, and it’s no surprise.
LaVine has big money tied to his future, while knee issues have made things difficult for him in the past.
In nine NBA seasons, LaVine has reached the postseason just once, and on a personal level, he may also want a trade in a bid to finally taste postseason success amid a difficult stretch for the Bulls.
Towns has slipped down the pecking order in Minnesota, and his field goal attempts have been reduced significantly as a result.
The Timberwolves seem to be moving in a different direction, and like the man above him in this list, Towns could do with some postseason success as he looks to solidify his career.
Towns has taken plenty of stick for his lack of postseason success, and a trade this off-season could work out well both for him and his current team.
Young has been linked with a trade for some time, and a trade may finally happen this summer.
It emerged in April that the Hawks‘ front office had been given permission to reshape the roster however it deemed fit, and that included the possibility of trading Young.
The point guard may be sacrificed as part of a rebuild in Atlanta, with the Georgian organization making big moves during this year by snapping up Dejounte Murray, while Quin Snyder has taken over as head coach.
Pascal Siakam is being linked with a trade to Atlanta, and that’s a move that may require some serious capital on the Hawks’ part. Young could help raise capital, and he too may look favorably upon a move if he does not see enough reason in the changes Atlanta are still in the process of making.
