A Towson University basketball player is on home detention facing rape charges.
Ryan Conway, 21, was allegedly involved in an incident in June 2022 at an off-campus apartment.
According to court documents, investigators said a woman admitted to being drunk at a friend’s house the morning after she had been out at a bar. She texted Conway, asking for a ride. He picked her up and took her back to his apartment to sleep, investigators said.
The documents show they had consensual sex initially, but then, “She stated she was a firm ‘no’ about having consensual intercourse. She said she was saying the word ‘no’ repeatedly and pushing on his arms in attempts to get him off of her, but she said she wasn’t strong enough.”
After it was over, the woman called a friend to pick her up, who took her to the hospital to get a rape kit. That was on June 26, 2022, according to court documents. They state the DNA results, completed on Feb. 15, pointed to Conway, but Baltimore County detectives didn’t get the results until June 13, and Conway was arrested and charged July 12.
It’s not clear why it took so long for detectives to receive the results.
Conway denied the assault, according to investigators, adding, “His team just had a meeting about this type of situation. They were warned to be careful as women make accusations about athletes.”
His lawyer said he plans to plead not guilty.
“The allegations are completely out of character for someone who has faithfully attended church his entire life, actively engaged in community service and comes from a wonderful, loving and supportive family,” the attorney said.
Towson University said they are cooperating with Baltimore County police in the matter.
A hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.
