Over these past few weeks, the Milwaukee Bucks have done a quality job retooling their roster, but one glaring hole remains, which is the backup point guard position.
After Jevon Carter inked a deal with the rivaling Chicago Bulls on the first day of NBA Free Agency, the Bucks were left without one, and they’ve still yet to address it. With 14 roster spots, the Bucks only have one vacancy left, and one would think the team has to be looking at another guard to fill the hole. Some have speculated that a trade could be on the horizon to clear out some of the wing rotation, but there have been few rumblings on that front as of now. As the Bucks look to put the finishing touches on their roster, let us look at a few free agent point guards they could target.
One reason the Bucks may not have signed a backup point guard already is that they wanted to get a better look at the ones on their Summer League roster first. That includes Jazian Gortman, the 20-year-old guard from Overtime Elite. Gortman has served as the backup in both games for the Bucks to this point and has shown some glimpses of potential.
The guard undeniably made a strong impression in the team’s Summer League opener against the Denver Nuggets, having scored 13 points on 71.4 percent shooting. He struggled a bit more to hit his shots against the Phoenix Suns in game two, but Gortman become more of a passer and tallied three assists instead. In two Summer League games, he’s averaged nine points and two assists in just 13.5 minutes per contest.
Milwaukee should undoubtedly look to lock Gortman up on one of their two-way deals at the bare minimum. Though he’s got his flaws as an undersized guard – he’s 6-foot-2, 170lbs – Gortman has shown glimpses of being a tenacious defender and lethal jump shooter. Some would debate if he’s ready for the NBA or not, but either way, he could very well be a hidden gem, so the team should keep him around. Fans have wanted the team to add some developmental pieces with upside, and Gortman certainly fits the profile.
