UNC basketball transfer portal recruiting: Tar Heels jump to No. 5 in rankings as Harrison Ingram commits – 247Sports
UNC jumped to No. 5 in the 2023 Transfer Basketball Team Rankings following Harrison Ingram’s commitment this past Saturday. The Tar Heels trail only West Virginia, Gonzaga, Arkansas and TCU, respectively.
Ingram, formerly of Stanford, was the No. 20 prospect in the portal after a sophomore season in which he averaged 10.5 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 40.8% from the field and 31.9% from 3-point range.
“For me, it was a full package deal; they have everything,” Ingram told 247Sports. “It is a great school; the coaching staff has a plan for me, a vision for me. I met all the players like RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, Seth Trimble and the other guys on the team, and we clicked right away.”
With Ingram’s addition, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish moved the Tar Heels to No. 26 in his Top 25 And 1 rankings.
“This ranking is based on the Tar Heels returning two of the top three scorers — R.J. Davis and Armando Bacot – from a team that spent much of the season ranked in the top 30 at KenPom,” Parrish wrote. “The addition of Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan and Jae’Lyn Withers via the transfer portal should provide Hubert Davis with enough to return to the 2024 NCAA Tournament after the Tar Heels missed it in 2023.”
UNC’s four-man portal class also features four-stars Cormac Ryan (Notre Dame), Jae’Lyn Withers (Louisville) and Paxson Wojcik (Brown). Ryan was the No. 72 prospect in the portal, while Withers (No. 106) and Wojcik (No. 119) ranked in the top 150.
Eric Bossi, 247Sports national basketball director, picked UNC when asked which teams were impressing in the portal.
“I’m going with Hubert Davis and North Carolina,” Bossi said on 247Sports’ College Basketball Recruiting Weekly. “They added their third and fourth transfers; they’ve got a top-five transfer class. Cormac Ryan is getting undervalued in what he can bring transferring from Notre Dame. He’s got a lot of experience. He’s going to be able to step out and knock down an outside shot, which is something they could have used more of last year. Like I said, the experience is huge. But then Harrison Ingram, adding him to Ryan and Jae’Lyn Withers and (Paxson) Wojcik, I love what they did there.”
Ingram can flourish in Chapel Hill after putting up modest numbers in his two years on the West Coast, Bossi explained.

“He’s a guy that didn’t put up huge numbers at Stanford, but I think he can really flourish once he gets to Chapel Hill,” Bossi said. “He’s a playmaking 3/4. He’s going to have a chance to maybe develop his shooting a little bit, which has been the question, but we’re talking about a former five-star, former McDonald’s All-American and a Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. You add that to the group they’ve got coming in, and they’ve got a lot of experience, and they’ve filled a lot of holes in their roster. North Carolina gets my vote.”
